Pre-Howry, the Cubs have 13 players with signed contracts for the 2006 season, for a total of $67,616,667.

These 13 are:

  • Aramis Ramirez
    Derrek Lee
    Michael Barrett
    Henry Blanco
    Kerry Wood
    Greg Maddux
    Mark Prior
    Ryan Dempster
    Todd Walker
    Scott Williamson
    Glendon Rusch
    Neifi Perez
    Scott Eyre

Adding Zambrano at $6.0 and four "minimum wage" guys (Murton, Cedeno, Ohman, and Wuertz) at $0.35 each brings the total to $75,016,667.

Adding Howry at $4.0 brings the total to $79,016,667.

Use that figure to arrive at what's left - depending upon what you want to assume the actual payroll limit is.

Wow, if Wood and his 12.5 is out for a good part of the season that is really going to hurt.

I don't see how the Cubs can trade for Abreu without Philly tossing in some cash and the Cubs giving up a lot of prospects. Giles and Furcal put the Cubs with around 5 to 8 to spend and I'm sure Jones or Burnitz will fit that budget under the Hendry plan.

so we've got $18-20 or so to get an outfielder and 2 bench spots. i like mabry at 1-1.5 on the bench, which leaves plenty to get giles, but likely not enough to get furcal and giles.

edit: i was going with the total now at 85. if its 79, that gives us a little more wiggle room, but still tough for furcal and a big bat in RF.

Adding Zambrano at $6.0 and...

Corey Patterson, Jerry Hairston and Jose Macias are arbitration eligible as well. I would assume that their salaries would have to factor into the left-over money, or be traded or be non-tendered.

Now you know why people were complaining about the Perez and Rusch signings.

I don't think people should be too convinced that payroll is stuck at $100. If Hendry feels that he can improve the ballclub vastly beyond next year by spending extra $$ i expect him to do so. Although we will have a hike in Lee's salary with a poss new contract we also lose Maddux and Woods money in '07.

I've been figuring around $105, but leaving room for those all-so-important midseason acquisitions.

If last years payroll with Sosa was around 100 million ,assuming they make there natural bump this year the payroll should be around 105 million. Add in a new rooftop , new bleacher seats, ticket hike, mlb revenue money we should be seeing a payroll at 110 million.

OK i admit i've had a good day , and i actually like the Howry signing and i would be pretty happy with Mabury as a bench player but i have to say this. I think something really big is going to happen in the next few weeks. Not just a trade for a mench or the signing of Jaque Jones i honestly think JH is going to do something to make us fall of our chairs. I could see it being paying all the money in the bank to Furcal or a HUGE trade for a corner OF. I have criticised JH as much as the next guy i just think this year he really wants to win......

I have that same feeling Wrigley. I'm thinking Manny,Abreu, or Dunn. I think he is gonna go big.

I wouldn't fall off my chair for a Furcal signing. I would if he actually went out and solved the OF problem. But making marginal upgrades to a position that is not lacking in decent options wouldn't be a blockbuster to me. There's just been so much speculation already about that possible signing.

Thanks for the updates. I, too, think Patterson and Walker are goners. I think Hendry feels he needs to make a splash this offseason. And he's indicated he's willing to wheel and deal to make it happen. SHould make for an interesting winter meeting in a couple weeks.

Try this. Some of the pictures kind of startled me seeing all that stuff torn down to the brick wall in the outfield and the loss of the bushes in center. Don't know if that is permanent.

I heard they were putting a restaurant where the juniper bushes are right now.

Please, stick with the bushes.

That is correct. It will be a piece of glass there instead of bushes.
