Like I said in another thread, the Cardinals may never lose the division championship again if they sign Giles or Burnett.

Agreed and here we have a GM that spends the money acquiring the mid-level talent.

No way we get him, not going to happen.

I agree, for two reasons:

a) the Cards don't have the money.

b) Jocketty isn't that stupid.

With the combination of Walker retiring and Morris, hopefully, going elsewhere I'm praying that the Cards can sign Giles and Burnett. To do this Jocketty trades Marquis, saving about 5 million, and brings Reyes up.

Carpenter

Mulder

Burnett

Suppan

Reyes

That could be an awesome rotation.

As long as he spends the money to acquire the major talent, it doen't matter what he spends on these frivilous toys. The Cubs have money, money is not an issue. They have near 30 million to spend. After these 3 signings. He's had 2 weeks. I really think it's a bit premature to think that's all he's gonna spend money on.

Now if we get Encarncion/Jones/Hunter/Gonzalez etc., I'll be leading the angry mob down to JH office. Until actual big moves are made, by ANY organization, I think it's prudent to wait.

Money is most definitely an issue. It's always an issue. This is not the Yankees. There is a budget. Every dollar spent on mediocrity is a dollar that cannot be spent on the pursuit of excellence.

Burnett is a high risk / high reward type of player. I don't mind taking chances on guys, but 10-12 million dollar chances aren't for me.

The best you can hope for from Burnett is that he is good enough to justify the contract. Ideally, if you are signing someone who is a question, you want there to be a chance he can out perform the contract. (i.e. Dempster)

In a perfect world, the Cards will sign him to a five-year deal and he'll be awful, eat up a bunch of their salary for two years but never go on the DL so they can't collect any insurance. Then, they'll trade him and a boat load of cash to cover the contract and he'll take off and win three Cy Youngs somewhere else.

Yep, that would be beautiful. Unfortunately, it is what would happen to the Cubs. He'll be a great addition for the Cards if he signs there, everyone is.

No way that happens. I can't remember a time when Jocketty has ever overpaid for a free agent starting pitcher and I don't think he'll start now in a Kate Moss thin market.

Hey, I can dream can't I?

The reality is he'll find some bum like Woody Williams or Tony Womack who becomes magically better while with the Cards before crashing back to reality with another team. It really is quite amazing. :wall:

I'm not bitter. :^o

You should be. The Cardinals' ability to plug any moran into the lineup and get good production is astounding to me. John Rodriguez, Abraham Nunez anyone?
