Notre Dame going to beat DePaul and they will be in the Big East tourny...

it's pretty pathetic how every team doesn't get in the tournament. What's so hard about adding a day earlier to have the 13th place team play the 16th place team at the 13th place team's home floor and having the 14th place team play the 15th place team at the 14th place team's home court? Pretty pathetic...the Big East definitely has to look into something like that.

From Andy Katz's blog:

Next week, you'll probably hear a lot of Big East coaches talk about how unfair it is that only 12 of the 16 teams get to the conference tournament in New York.

Well, it's not going to change. Just listen to Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese on the subject.

• "If you have a 16-team conference tournament, then why are we having the regular season?

• "Why would we want [the top] four of our teams to play four games in five days?

• "We've created an atmosphere where you have to earn your way to New York; that's good and it makes games like Notre Dame-Providence [Wednesday night] mean something.

• "What would be the purpose of a UConn-South Florida game on campus? If we have to do campus sites, then we're not having a tournament.

• "We can't eliminate Sunday games on the last day [of the regular season, to set up for a potential Monday campus-site round] because that's in our television contract."

• "When I talked to the presidents [and said] that some coaches were saying that [not getting to New York] could cost them their jobs, they laughed,'' Tranghese said.

He added that it wasn't something the presidents ever thought about.

One other note that was passed on by another Big East official as to why campus sites on short notice won't occur: too many teams play in public/pro buildings, and getting them on short notice isn't likely. Also, the cost and lost class time of spending Tuesday-Saturday in New York makes a 16-team event moot.

"We're not changing the format,'' Tranghese said. "The only way is if the presidents do, and they haven't said they will.''

well the Commish is pretty dumb then as the scenario that I listed, having the last 4 teams play in play-in games, eliminates the scenario of the top 4 teams playing 4 games in 5 days.

They also don't have to use the Garden for 5 days as the 2 play-in games would be at the 13th and 14th place home venues. I really don't understand why they don't consider this idea..its common sense. I just can't believe how a team that beats Syracuse by 39 doesn't even make their conference tournament.

ND wins 66-61! We're goin' to New York, baby!

BSU wins 89-77 to lock themselves in as the ninth seed in the MAC tourney, which begins on Monday.

NIU won the MAC West and locked up the 2nd seed :)

What's the point of that though? I could see that if there was a tie for the 12th spot, but those teams had ample opportunity to win the necessary games to make it in.

DePaul is missing the tourney because they lost to Notre Dame, Louisville, Rutgers, and twice to Providence, while never beating anyone in the top half of the conference.

Things look even better for Bradley in the championship, as both SIU and UNI have lost to Bradley during their now 7 game win streak. SIU lost 72-60 and UNI lost 71-49 at home during not only their Senior Game, but also the last game at their old stadium...

SIU and UNI in OT...defense at its best.

its crazy that they both scored 20's...

these teams are about as equal as you can get. They played a double OT classic at UNI with UNI coming out with the win and SIU won by 1 on a shot by Tony Young with 7 seconds left in Carbondale. No surprise that there is another OT game between these 2 teams.

45-42 SIU with 2:20 left...please hold on...

SIU wins 55-46 in OT, going to face the Braves tomorrow night.

I think the Braves will win, they are playing really well right now and are the hot hand, and for the record, I am not picking them just because I am a Bradley student, I thought they would lose today.

i feel real good right now..I picked this final before the tourny started and I really think that this is going to be a good game. If we can stop Bradley's perimeter guys, especially Sommerville and Bennett, I think SIU will come out with the win. Both teams IMO have played themselves into the Big Dance though with their strong showings in the tourny.

This will be a fun game. I have a friend at both SIU and Bradley so I'm happy for them, but my friend at Bradley is a better friend, so I'm rooting for them. :D

My God, Tyler Hansbrough is so good. I've actually hung out with him before. Not only is he ridiculously good at b-ball, but he's a really nice guy too.

Not sure how long the stretch got, but at one point JJ only had one FG over 33 minutes.

And yes, Hansbrough is a beast.

You think teams will be studying the last two games' worth of tape on Duke? If it wasn't for the man-love the selection comittee has for the Blue Devils, you would almost think they would need to win the ACC tourney to get the #1 seed. But no, they can lose to Clemson or whoever next week and still get the easiest regional.

Bummer that DePaul lost. But like Penn State, they are returning nearly all of their players next year and should be better. The one announcer during today's game said the Blue Demon back court will be one of the best in the Big East next year. We'l see...
