Why would he want to go to the Dodgers? That team is a mess right now.

Yeah, I don't get that either. I think it is reasonable to conclude that he is using the Dodgers to drive the price up.

Stand firm Jim; call his bluff. If he wants LA and their manager-less team, let him have it. Especially if he wants a guaranteed 5th year and more than $55 mill. Then go out and acquire Pierre and Abreu (please!!!!!!!!!!!!).

Does anyone think Hampton really cared about Denver Schools? It's all about the $$$

Anyone else getting really tired of this crap with Furcal? One moment he's leaning towards the Cubs, next minute he's wanting to stay with the Braves, and now the Dodgers have become a big player. I could never be a GM. I would have given Furcal's agent an ultimatum a while ago. :D

If we don't sign Furcal we are in a world of trouble.

Depending on what the backup plan is, I'd agree. I don't like thinking about what plans B and C might be.

supposedly abreu is going to cost a front of the line starter. i'm not giving up Z or Prior for abreu and there is no way they take Wood (disregarding the NTC issue).

ok, so if abreu is available why haven't we offered the world for him yet? i would gladly wave goodbye to pie, dopirak, greenberg, etc. for the chance to add a guy of bobby a's capability. with him hitting between lee and a-ram, i could play CF and leadoff and the cubs would win 94 games. if they could add pierre as well, lord have mercy on the NL!

Now might be the time for Hendry to talk to Tampa Bay, and throw it out to the beat writers that he is taking a hard look at Julio Lugo and Aubrey Huff.

Let's see how fast Furcal agrees to the Cubs offer then.

Dodgers make substantial offer to Furcal

After watching targeted free-agent outfielder Brian Giles re-sign with rival San Diego, the Dodgers have made a substantial offer to free-agent shortstop Rafael Furcal.

The Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs also remain in the bidding for Furcal, who would take over for the injured Cesar Izturis if he joined the Dodgers, with Izturis eventually sliding over to second base and Jeff Kent to first base if they land Furcal. Izturis is expected to be out until the All-Star break after undergoing Tommy John elbow reconstruction.

The Cubs reportedly have offered Furcal, 27, a five-year deal worth an estimated $50 million and the Dodgers' offer is believed to be in that neighborhood. A decision could come by Monday's start of the Winter Meetings.

I wish this would end all ready. I don't really care anymore about where he signs. I just wish he'd make up his mind so we can move on.

I think Furcal wants to stay in Atlanta. There are some much better deals on the table. I hope Hendry has a plan b.

The Dodgers jumped into the bidding just this week, but have immediately made themselves a serious candidate with a three-year offer believed to be valued at an eye-opening $39 million. Kinzer wouldn't comment when asked whether the astonishingly high offer had been made.

I found this disturbing...

-taken from mlb.com

If the Braves retain Furcal, it will be with what will likely be a substantial hometown discount. He went to an Atlanta Hawks game with his close friend Andruw Jones on Wednesday night, and throughout the past week, has received a few phone calls from manager Bobby Cox, a man he looks at like a father.

"It's Raffy's choice," Kinzer said. "He will decide where he wants to play."

And another...

One former Braves player said that he didn't think Furcal would choose the Cubs because of the fact that they play so many day games at Wrigley Field. But if the reports are correct, there would be 50 million reasons why he could enjoy playing more games under the sun.

I felt much better about this last week! Looks like we are in some heavy competition for Mr. Furcal's services!

JH, do yo thang brotha man!

That was the quote from then Cub pitcher Alan Benes, when talking about Jim Hendry and his approach of meeting with free agents, one on one. I can't remember how long ago Benes said this. Was it the Baker signing? Maddux or someone else? Whoever it was, Hendry has had a pretty good track record in getting the people he wants. I like the Cubs chances as well in signing Furcal and others.

If that's true or if the Dodgers extend the number of years, I think Hendry will pursue other options. He wants Furcal bad, but there comes a point when sanity must prevail. But then again, this IS the Cubs...

raise your hand if you'd sign furcal to a 1 year $15 mil contract at this point so we would have a giant load of cash to spend next offseason after a bunch of other teams finish making 1999-2001 mistakes this offseason

I don't think Furcal would do it though.

I really don't want the Cubs to sign Furcal for 10/5.
