I'm not advocating one way or another if Hendry should get him or not for our open RF slot. I'm only initiating a discussion. I will merely point out that he's under 30, bats left-handed and is arbitration eligible for one more season. He made $2.6M in 2005 and will probably get $4-5M range in 2006 if offered arbitration or tendered. He is rumoured to be on the trading block.

I happened to be looking at his stats earlier, and made some observations I would like to share with you. Overall, he had 488 at bats with a .317 OBP and .516 SLG (SLG ranked 2nd among all RFs in baseball) for an OPS of .833. Here's a breakdown by position:

(1) He had 8 at bats as a pinch hitter

OBP was 0 and SLG was 0.

(2) He had 70 at bats when playing 1B

OBP was .307 and SLG was .414

(3) He had 151 at bats when playing DH

OBP was .270 and SLG was .430

(4) he had 259 at bats when playing RF

OBP was .357 and SLG was .610

Now, I don't know if the sample size is large enough for this to be statistically significant, but does it strike you as odd how radically different his offensive numbers were when playing RF vs. not playing RF?

If we miss out on acquiring Giles and Matsui, or making a trade for Abreu, Dunn, Sheffield, would Gibbons be a better choice than the tier 2 free agents like Jacque Jones, Juan Encarnacion, Preston Wilson and Reggie Sanders?

Here are his career numbers by position:

1B: .242/.289/.434/.723 (299 PA's)

LF: .240/.290/.590/.880 (105 PA's)

RF: .277/.329/.486/.815 (1513 PA's)

DH: .227/.294/.390/.683 (395 PA's)

Overall: .261/.315/.466/.781 (2342 PA's)

While he does outperform his career norms as a corner outfielder, I don't like that his OBP remains low to anemic depending on the position.

That is strange. Gibbons is at least interesting. He's much better than any of those guys you listed. If he could put it all together in 1 season, he could be a very good pickup. Last year, he had an ISOP of .240, but a BB/PA of .054. He's a career .071 BB/PA hitter, and was approaching a decent .08 before this year. If he can keep his ISOP that high, while getting back to a .077 BB/PA hitter, and can hit .277 like he did in 05 and 03 (.246/.247 in 02 and 04), he could be a solid player. Not great. But he could put up a line of .280/.330/.510.

He's the only of those last guys that could give you that line and actually have a salary that warrants that production.

I believe the Cubs can and have done worse than Gibbons. Gibbons seems like exactly the type of guy that Hendry likes. Relatively young, productive but yet to break out, somewhat unwanted in his current surroundings and relatively cheap.

Gibbons batting 5th behind Ramirez and ahead of Murton breaks up the string of RH bats.

Is Gibbons a better option than Mench? Maybe. I like him over Sanders, Encarnacion, Jones and Burnitz.

He's an option, but I don't think he should be the first option. In fact, I'd rather have Milton Bradley in right over Gibbons.

I'd be afraid to get him, because he'd provide Dusty the perfect left handed LF to "platoon" with Murton.

Anyone else have an irrational objection to acquiring any player named after a type of ape? The prospect bothers me, and I have no idea why
