I just thought we could have a formal thread on this. Anyone heard any rumblings or news out of CA? Edited by USSoccer

Anyone heard any rumblings or news out of Florida?

Probably not, since the GM Meetings are in Indian Wells, CA.

D'oh! Let me just...fix..that....there.

My fault!

Have there been any good deals coming out of the GM meetings the past few years? It seems there's a whole lot of hype for these things but nothing fruitful comes from them.

Lots of talk but not much action. With so little decided in free agency and such, I think the GM meetings are more the groundwork of all the action you'll see in Free Agency and the Winter Meetings.

So it's like T-Ball for GMs?
Not exactly. It's more like executive Spring Training. Many of the trades that take place at the Winter Meetings in December start at the GM meetings taking place now.

Some trades take a few weeks to work out behind the scenes and there are conveniently 4 weeks between the two events.

Did the AJ Pierzynski/Nathan trade happen at the GM meetings a couple years ago, or am I imagining that? Seemed like it happened earlier in the offseason than the winter meetings.

Careful using the word rumblings and California in the same sentence. For those of us that live out here, its a little disconcerting.

In the same vein, if the Cubs signed Brian Giles this off season, how high would the needle jump if there was a Richter Scale outside Wrigley Field?

And who's fault would it be if they let him go to the Cardinals?

Okay, I'll stop now.

With the thin FA market this year, I think there will be more activity (i.e. trade rumors/discussions) than during other years.

Since I live right around the corner (an hour) from Indian Wells, maybe I will drop in. Any idea what resort they are at and if they are still happening on Wednesday?

So how much are the other GMs gonna be laughing behind Hendry's back?

I came to a horrifying realization this morning that Hendry is like Bowden-lite. Both make pretty good trades. Hendry's(Barrett, Lee, Ramirez, Nomar) bring in better talent, but Bowden(Guillen, Lawrence, Wilson, Byrd, Nomar?) gets talent for next to nothing as well. Both have been terrible with Free Agent contracts, Bowden's(Castilla, Guzman) being worse than Hendry's(Maddux, Remlinger, Neifi).

Check the current poll on cubs.com. Giles is 4th place in "most wanted FA" with 8% of the vote after Damon with 47%.

That right there shows you the aptitude of your average fan. Let's hope that if the team wants to solicit advice from the internet, they look here rather than there.

And high-fiving. And just like the other NBA GMs with Isiah Thomas, they'll be offering him terrible trades as jokes just to see if he takes them.

Agreed.

Agreed. I'm guessing the average Cub fan thinks today's signing of Perez was a good idea. "He did a great job this season filling in for Nomar, he plays great defense and has all the intangibles."
