Jeter still has golden touch

Yankees plan to keep young stars

But here's what is interesting:

Nov. 2 - "The Yankees must formulate an off-season strategy that will yield an everyday center fielder and a power arm or two as a bridge to closer Mariano Rivera. Certain plans may involve trading Gary Sheffield, Carl Pavano or Jaret Wright, though the Yankees' first focus is on re-signing Hideki Matsui - possibly to a three-year deal with an option worth a potential $44 million."

Nov. 1 - "With corner outfielders such as Brian Giles, Jacque Jones and Reggie Sanders available via free agency, the Yanks could explore signing such a player and making Gary Sheffield available in a trade to fill a center field spot. Sheffield's value is unquestioned, but he has a history of being disgruntled by the contracts he signs and could cause the Yankees more grief in the final year of his $39 million pact."

Patterson, Walker and a prospect or some 3-way deal involving Florida sending Pierre to NYY might be in the cards. Sheffield's contract calls for $13M in 2006, and there is a team option for $13M in 2007. The Cubs can certainly afford both. He'll be 37, but he still is incredibly productive.

Thoughts?

do you remember the tantrum he threw mid-season when he heard about the trade rumors involving him?

Not as much as I remember his umpteenth straight season as one of the top 5 most productive OFs in baseball.

Agreed. This is what Dusty gets the bucks for, BTW; handling Sheffield-types.

Production aside, sheff scares me. Wasn't he the one who purposely caused clubhouse problems with MIL so he'd be traded to a different team? Or at least, wasn't that a widely accepted rumor?

If so, I'd prefer to stay away.

which is what he said he'd do (2005 mid-season) if he were traded.

at this point you got to be open to simply upgrading. we cant plan on furcal or giles coming here because their current teams can offer them money too. i would be open to anything pretty much. if furcal signs with atlanta, we could be looking nomar and todd walker as our double-play combo and cedeno playing a utility role. if that is the case, i would consider damon also despite his age and large deal coming up. lets say furcal and giles sign elsewhere, bringing in somebody like damon or a different player like sheffield has to be better than what we got.

sheffield would be a nice 5th spot hitter. burnitz is not a #5 hitter on a world series team, thats im sure of. but a 3-4-5 of Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, and Gary Sheffield is. or Damon-Walker-Lee-Ramirez-Garciaparra would also work in the 1-5 spots, if nomar is healthy. if he isnt, which he hasnt been for 2 years, than we're looking at somebody like murton hitting 5th. can murton be counted as a #5 hitter right now? i wouldnt try it....

Minnesota is the other team we could do a 3 way deal with:

Torii Hunter to New York

Gary Sheffield to the Cubs

Corey Patterson and a high prospect to the Twins

If Sheffield is willing to play here, I have no problem bringing him here and it seems to be a desireable option. His contract isn't burdensome and would be up at a time when there would be younger and more attractive free agents to pursue.

If I'm Hendry, I would want permission to talk to Sheff before making the deal and guage his feelings on coming to Chicago. Sheff seems like the player that might actually play better for Baker, so it's definitely something I would look into.

Sheff strikes me as the type of guy who will just sit out, if he doesn't get his way. If he wants to be on the coast, Sheff, Walker & Pavano to LA, Drew & Kent to Chicago, Wood and Bradley to NY. *shrug*

Waste of time. Sheff won't play for the Cubs. He's stated in the past he only wants to play on the coasts. He's a very prickly dude. Next idea.

During this past season he said he wants to stay in NY for the rest of his career.

The Dodgers have already had Sheffield once and I believe he wore out his welcome.

Doesn't anyone remember his use of steroids? I'd be afraid of a dropoff. I don't want anything to do with any known roid users.

If Sheffield had a "sit down" with Hendry and agreed to come to Chicago, then I'd say he'd be a welcome addition - I just have a feeling he wouldn't come here and I believe one of the things he said last year when his name was rumored to be in trade talks is that he'd retire before he played anywhere else.

BTW - just out of curiousity, what would happen if Sheffield were traded to another team and then before spring training decided to retire?? I'm assuming the team who traded for him would be SOL correct?

I agree. The only time you take on Sheffield is if he agrees to it in advance. He has effectively created his own no trade clause without actually having one.

That's right. I knew it was something. Sorry for the inaccurate reporting.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no and no. I'd rather have Burnitz back than Sheffield.

He's a clubhouse cancer, and I certainly would trade away Walker for him, let alone including other people.

I will be extremely pissed if this happens.

Isn't Dusty supposed to attract players we wouldn't get otherwise? Let's have Dusty call up Sheffield and see what happens. The worst that could happen is Dusty fails and looks stupid, but we're already used to that. Maybe Dusty really could charm Sheffield into at least considering the Cubs. There's nothing to lose by trying.

Sheffield: 2005- 291/379/512

2002-2004: 304/397/550

Burnitz: 2005- 258/322/435

2002-2004: 261/327/492

uhmmmm....Sheffield please.

(I guess I should be careful. The last time I compared a player to Burnitz's suckitude, they wished for me to die.)

While you're at it, why not add Joey Belle to your list too, he really could put up the numbers!

Sheffield's problems are not anywhere near what Belle's have been. Sheffield's issues must not be much of a detriment to winning teams either. The Yankees have been to the playoffs with him as have the Braves. He also went to a World Series with the Marlins. So either, he isn't the problem everyone makes him out to be or chemistry is overrated.

Roll your eyes all you want, but if you really think Sheffield hurts his team, you haven't looked at the standings the past three years.
