The way I see it is....Jeter ain't even the BEST GG caliber SS on his OWN team (coughsARODcoughs) much less the AL.

And yes....IMO, Jeter is a 2B playing out of position at SS. And yes, Jeter is massively overrated, simply because of the amount of $$$ he is making---which BTW, is slightly less then $20 mill per yr). If DJ would be making around 8-10 mill per, he'd be one of the game's best, but at $19.6 mill, he is GROSSLY overrated. Besides, would we even be talking about Jeter if he was on a small market team, say...Detroit (his home town team)?

No. Fine player, Jeter is....but make no mistake he is BASEBALL's most overrated player.

No kidding. The only joke bigger than him winning a gold glove is that A-Rod moved to third so he could stay at SS.

Interestingly, Jeter's defensive stats (both traditional and sabermetric) have improved dramatically ever since A-Rod joined the team.

I wonder if this is just coincidence?

i'm going to be POed if Pujols gets the 1B GG over Lee.

I would be shocked if that happened. The only other 1B I can see winning it is Helton. Lee already won one, and that's when he was far from the well-known player he is now.

The fact that Lee beat Pujols for the Silver Slugger speaks volumes. Then again, stranger things have happened....

does anyone know what time they are going to announce the NL winners?

I hate the fact that AL awards are always out before NL. Why not both at the same time?

The NL has seniority, so to speak. They should have all their award winners named first.

This post nicely outlines the reasoning for my Jeter comment in the original post. Jeter may be the best in the AL, but the competition isn't quite what it used to be either.

Didn't mean to turn this thread into a Jeter discussion...my bad. :)

Helton deserves it. A quick glance at stats shows that much. If Lee gets it, it'll be more for his hitting than anything, as odd as that is for a fielding award.

You got the stats to prove why Helton deserves over Lee?

Cause the NL's been around longer?

In BP today they have an article by Clay Davenport about the GG. Here's what he has say about the NL 1B:

On all of the tables below, the fielders will be rated by the familiar stat-stat-stat routine, only instead of AVG, OBP, and SLG, they will be Fielding Rate, Runs Above Replacement, and Runs Above Average (using the in-season, rather than the all-time, version). Since the awards are as much about reputation as performance, and since a reputation usually takes time to acquire, we’ll break the stats out into 2005 only, 2004 and 2005 combined, and career. Asterisks (*) will designate the 2004 winner.

National League
Player, Team 2005 2004-05 Career
*Todd Helton, Col 114-28-19 115-61-43 110-201-124
Nick Johnson, Was 109-20-11 107-28-14 105-38-16
Derrek Lee, Chi 109-24-14 109-50-29 107-138-70
Lyle Overbay, Mil 111-24-15 108-43-25 110-59-36

In the AL, I think Lee and Overbay could very easily be winners, but the competition is stiffer here thanks to Todd Helton. Helton is the defending champ, and makes a clean sweep of all three categories, even though Overbay and Lee have performed at legitimate GG levels--Helton’s just been better, and his career total is rapidly moving up the all-time lists. Voters could be swayed by Lee’s Triple Crown run in batting, and he did beat out Helton two years ago. Helton should win, but none of the four listed would be a disgrace to the award.

Everybody with half a brain hates AL baseball. NL should be first
