If there was illegal touching on the fumble, is that not reviewable?

Yes it's reviewable, but delroy is wrong. I watched that play carefully, and at no point did any part of the guy who recovered Harrison's fumble go out of bounds. There was no illegal touching, and the proper call was made.

I guess that's psu objectivity.

Right, because Michigan didn't get about 2 extra yards on every 3rd down spot in the 2nd half of the PSU game. Not to mention the mystery 2 seconds they gave back to Carr, or deciding not to review the pass when the UM receiver clearly landed out of bounds, or, or, or....

Don't forget Michael Hart's long fumble-less streak... it's not that he hasn't fumbled the ball in 350 carries or whatever, it's that no fumbles have been called on him. He's fumbled the ball at least 3 times and had it called down by contact.

Enough of that though... on to the huge game against Wisconsin next week! Can't wait, baby.

The WR who recovered Harrison's fumble was clearly out of bounds and the first player to touch that ball when it was loose.

Derwood, you're right, except I believe UM got 12 extra yards on every spot, not 2. 12.

Unless you're talking about a play other than the one where Basanez was picked, it was returned to around NWern's 20, fumbled, then recovered by NWern, I'm pretty sure you're wrong. My Michigan friend Tivo'ed the game and I'm going over there to watch the Eagles game right now, so I'll check the replay to make sure.

Woo, moving up to #7. Thank you, Georgia. Still don't like two 1-loss teams ahead of us, but whatever. We aren't going to get any respect unless we are undefeated going into the USC game and beat USC.

In all fairness, should UCLA get too much respect considering they had to come back from down 21 against a team that lost to UC Davis earlier this year?

ND moved up to 8 with absolutely no one left on the schedule who can beat the Irish if they play even half as good as they can, so a BCS berth is all but a certainty.

Yes they should, considering they have yet to lose this year.

Stanford is not the same team that lost to UC Davis. Harris is getting that team to play pretty good. He also had a few bad losses when he first got to Pitt, but he turned that around quickly as well. He runs a complicated system that is not easy to learn. I am actually worried about ND going out there at the end of the year.

you can be sarcastic, but I counted at least 3 times in the 2nd half when te UM player was clearly down well short of the "yellow line", yet the ref moved the ball up past the first down marker

USC is back on top in the BCS. Big suprise. Texas, VT, Bama, then UCLA round out the top five. Miami is 6th. Gonna be a great game this weekend with VT.

I probably have said this already but I am a Mich St fan. Born and raised in the Traverse City area. I probably dislike Mich more than anyone. I just do not see any Pro-Mich bias in the officiating. Is there bad calls, Yes. If you would OBJECTIVELY watch all Michigan games they also get calls that dont go there way. I didnt get a chance to watch this years Penn St/ Mich game so I dont want to comment. I do remember the game 3 or 4 years ago when Paterno tracked down the referee and complained about the reciever catching the ball in bounds. One or two plays before that on 4th and long a Penn St reciever clearly used the ground to aid in his recieving a ball. If the catch isnt made it would have been Mich ball game would have been over. I never heard Penn St fans or Paterno complaining about that.

Throughout the course of a game calls go both ways. We as fans pick out the ones that bother us and ignore the ones that help our teams. Since Mich is probably the most hated team in the Big Ten everyone picks out the calls that go their way and ignore the ones that dont. Heck they lost a game at Mich St a couple of years ago because of a bad time keeper. On John Stoccos QB draw that won the game for Wisconsin over Michigan one of Michigans DT wasnt held he was tackled and it wasnt called. Before Chad Henne fumbled on the QB sneak against ND, Mich got the ball over the goal line on both the previous plays. As a matter of fact Avant scored but the ball was spotted on the 1/2 yard line. The next play was a qb sneak that Henne got over wasnt given to them. There was an Offsides penalty on ND and the ball came out to the 1. So they lost a 1/2 yard on a penalty to ND. I didnt see the Minnesota game so I wont comment. I am just saying if you look at it objectively Mich isnt getting anymore calls than anyone else.

OK so maybe some officials are biased towards ND...

Nevada's Ratner moved by experience at Notre Dame

By Ron Kantowski

Las Vegas Sun

Football officials are like magicians in that they don't talk shop very much, especially to outsiders. So don't expect Marc Ratner to engage in a lengthy discourse on whether Reggie Bush pushing USC teammate Matt Leinart over the goal line at Notre Dame two weeks ago was a legal play.

But he can confirm it happened. Last Saturday, just seven days after the most memorable college football game of the new millennium, Ratner could still see the imprint of Leinart's body in the shaggy grass in the end zone.

Ratner, the executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission who moonlights as a Mountain West Conference football official, was part of the officiating crew assigned to last week's Brigham Young vs. Notre Dame game at South Bend, Ind.

Having grown up idolizing Paul Hornung -- the original Golden Boy, as Ratner constantly reminds Oscar De La Hoya -- he said patrolling the sideline at venerable Notre Dame Stadium as a line judge was the thrill of a lifetime.

"I have officiated close to 150 Division One college football games, including bowl games," Ratner said upon returning from Indiana, where the Fighting Irish throttled the Cougars 49-23. "I can say now that it was the most exhilarating experience I have ever had as a football official."

It was even more special in that Ratner is retiring as an on-field official after this season. Next year, he will move to the press box as a replay booth official.

After spending a few hours at the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend on Friday and checking out the Fighting Irish trophy case with all those Heisman Trophy replicas at the Joyce Center on the Notre Dame campus, Ratner asked for an early wake-up call Saturday.

Normally, the officials aren't expected to report for duty until three hours before kickoff. Ratner arrived four hours early, hoping to soak in all the pomp and pageantry he could.

"Nobody was there except me and one other guy, so a security guard asked if I wanted to go into the locker room and look around," Ratner said.

That would be the home locker room. The one with the golden helmets hanging from their hooks.

Later, Ratner was assigned the task of informing Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis when NBC wanted the Irish to run onto the field.

Then it was time to go up the stairs to the tunnel, where 81,000 fans were waiting to hear the Notre Dame marching band play that famous Victory March.

Cue the goose bumps.

"In the hallway, I saw all those Rockne speeches and that banner says 'Play Like A Champion Today,' which all the players hit before they run onto the field. So I hit it, too," Ratner said.

"Then you're in the tunnel and notice that Coach Weis is just a couple of steps behind you and the Notre Dame team is behind him. You take a couple of steps and the roar of 81,000 envelops you.

"I felt like Rudy."

Ratner said that while running onto the field ahead of the Fighting Irish made the hair on his neck stand up, once the game started it was pretty much like any of the 150 others he has officiated.

Well, except for one play in the second half.

"Before the game, Coach Weis told me, 'I want you to know I'm gonna yell at you and call you some names,' " Ratner said. "Then in the third quarter he called me some names."

Ratner said Weis was upset that an intentional grounding call didn't go Notre Dame's way.

"I walked away, and he smiled. He said he knew I couldn't see intentional grounding on the other side of the field."

Ratner said it was a long game -- three hours, 46 minutes -- and it was pretty chilly after the sun dipped below the rim of the stadium. Still, he wouldn't have minded if the game went to an overtime or two.

"The most amazing emotion was when the game was over and the band was done playing and the (officiating) crew was way ahead of me in leaving and I stayed around," Ratner said.

He walked onto the field in the vicinity of the 10-yard line, where Hornung and Lujack and Lattner had roamed, where not-so-ordinary Joes such as Theismann and Montana had rallied the lads on their way to the end zone in so many big games against Michigan State and Purdue and those darn Trojans.

"Tears welled up in my eyes," Ratner said without the slightest bit of embarrassment.

Hearing the echoes will do that to a guy. Even one who wears a striped shirt.
