With our infields covered with the exception of SS for the Cubs and 2nd base for the Cards, both teams will be going after the same limited FA outfielder pool. It seems that both teams could re-sign their SS and 2nd base if they so choose.

An outfielder(s) is the biggest need on both teams. Looking forward to seeing who each team ends up with.

I think the Cubs should really target Furcal and Giles. Also while it might be unpopular to some of you I think you guys would also benefit in trading Wood.

Not now, with Wood's trade value at an all-time low because of his injuries. I'd rather keep him and hope he's healthy.

Just curious, but why would you say "you guys" if your handle is Cubs/Sox fan?

Check out the last pages of Cubs fans rooting for the Sox thread.

You can be a Sox -- or whoever -- fan, but there's no point saying you're a Cubs slash Whoever fan if you're really a Whoever fan. Just come out of the closet. What's the point?

I said in my other post that Im a whitesox fan first and foremost.... but ever since you 2003 run ive been following the cubs.... also Im not a big fan of either the astros/cardinals and I like to root for a team in each division.

For Example my favorite team a course being the white sox but

AL East: Toronto

AL West: Texas

NL East: Florida

NL Central: Cubs

NL West: well I dont really care for anyone in the NL West just hate the giants/dodgers.

so there you have it.

Giles is mentioned as a target for the Redbirds in the mailbag on mlb.com.

The reported makes some interesting conjecture, however.

Giles, first of all, is simply a fantastic player -- an exceptional hitter who plays solid defense, runs the bases well and is basically the prototype of a Tony La Russa player. PETCO Park killed his numbers this year -- away from home he hit .333 with a .463 OBP and .545 slugging percentage. I'll take two, please. However, he'll be 35 before next season starts, so I'd hesitate to give him too long a deal. Maybe two years with an option -- I think three years might be unwise.

As for the likelihood, it will depend on how the market shakes down. There aren't a lot of premium players, hitters or pitchers, on the market this year. Along with Giles, you're looking at Johnny Damon, possibly Hideki Matsui, and then a lot of guys like Juan Encarnacion and Jacque Jones. I don't see the Cardinals spending a ton to land Giles, but if he decides he wants to play here, it wouldn't be shocking

It seems to be the opinion of this writer that Giles will only be a Cardinal if it is a 2 year deal and one that isn't too highly priced.

If that's the case, I can't see Giles leaving the Left Coast for St. Louis.

Giles is at the top of my wish list, but I hope Hendry doesn't forget about Matsui. Either would be a definate upgrade, and if the Cubs are negotiating with both players, we could have whichever one will cost less.

Yeah, I think I read somewhere that the Yankees have already offered him more than 10 million per for 3 years - they don't intend to be outbid. So unless Matsui REALLY hates playing for the Yankees, I don't think he's going anywhere.
