Tim , i know the stats wont show that for that series but it seems when we play the marlins they cause havoc on the basepaths. I dont just mean the hits walks etc, when they get either of those two guys on something seems to happen. One example is this year at Wrigley , can't remember the exact ways the run scored but Pierre led off got on base moved over on a wild pitch bunted over to 3rd the SF scored the run. Thins like that stick in the memory as does the nervous nature of our pitching staff once a guy like pierre gets on. Maybe i'm looking for us to get some of the podsednick effect???!!

first: What Podsednik effect?

Second: that's one run generated that way. I'd wager that they scored a whole lot more runs off extra base hits against us. They just weren't as flashy.

If by "Podsednik Effect" you mean our enitre pitching staff having career years at once, then yeah, i'd love some of that on our side of town. :P

Well, we can have some influence on that by putting out a team with Furcal & Castillo on the IF and improved OF defense.

The podsednik effect would translate as getting a guy on who jump starts your offense. Not just the stolen bases or the his peskiness but someone at the top with good OBP so our hitters focus and have a platform. Similar to what Grudz did for us hitting no 2 in '03. If he got on base you could bet your bottom dollar a rally was going to happen , last year we were so consistantly poor at doing the right thinss.

yeah, but if it happens people will assume it was because we had speedy leadoff types manning the middle IF, and not because our staff era drops by a run per game.

I like castillo , so if a deal is possible for him do you still go after furcal?. I'm worried that loftons numbers will go down sooner rather than later. How sold are you guys on Pie? is he the real deal or just another tease??.

Like XZero, I figure Walker is gone. I have no problem with Furcal + Castillo, that'll provide Hendry with his defense and give Dusty two players with good OBPs that are fast so he'll bat them 1-2.

Zambrano Cy Young? Castillo and Furcal would be very entertaining, up the middle.

I don't care what others think. If the Cubs staff ERA drops by a run per game the Cubs will be in the playoffs and I'll be content with that.

i've actually heard that there's no prettier site to a catcher than pierre standing at first base.

Oh, me too. I was just trying to make a wry observation. It doesn't across as well via text. :-)

isn't anyone going to say anything about the suggestion of juan pierre playing rf for the cubs? ouch (once for the offense he'd 'provide' at that position) and ouch (once for the defense he'd 'provide' at that position).

Vance , what about a trade for a hitter like Burrel? If you could swing a trade for OBP guys like Castillo and land furcal you may be able to afford the SO that Burrel would bring. If you re-sign walker you would have a saleable chip not a good fit for the Phillies but what about if Texas ships soriano we could offer Walker and pitching for Mench?

Burrell and Mench are both possibilites. To get Castillo, you likely send Walker there, so he's not available to trade to Texas or Philly. Texas has Soriano and Philly has Utley, so I doubt either would be too interested in Walker, though Texas might use him as a DH.

I do think Texas would have some interest in Castillo as would the Marlins. While I like Ronny and think he could provide some cheap production, if you sign Furcal to a 3-4 year deal, it might be wise to trade Ronny for something that could help you.

And if Dusty's strength is handling malcontents, let's see what he can do with Guillen and Bradley. Both players have immense talent. We tried the chemistry route this year, and it didn't work too well. Let's try having some talented malcontents and see where that goes.

I wouldn't mind seeing this. Both are good players - maybe Bradley will be more comfortable in a clubhouse led by a minority manager as opposed to a white guy.
