I'd rather take my chances and save 4 mil with Rodriguez than Jones. But, it's hard not to ponder the last 2 seasons by Rodriguez. He might be below avg. for a LF'er, I think he's a 4th OF'er, but there's a luxury there with having Edmonds in CF.

The best hitter when healthy is still Barry Bonds.

The best hitter this season was Derrek Lee.

The best player over the last five years is Rodriguez.

1) I agree.

2) I agree.

3) I don't have 5-year splits, but the 3 year splits show that Pujols has been quite a bit better than A-rod over the last 3 years offensively. Probably enough to make up for A-rod's defensive value.

ARod puts up Pujols like #s, and he's a Shortstop! Yeah, I know he's playing 3rd, but I still think he's the best SS on the Yankees...

A-rod doesn't put up Pujols-like numbers. Pujols' OPS is about 100 points higher over the last 3 years.

Barry Bonds is washed up. (No more magic cream)

Lee had a better season, but Pujols is miles ahead the last 5 years.

ARod may be the best player of this generation.

That's why I qualified that as this season.

I still think Bonds when healthy is the best hitter. He did quite well in his few games back this year. I don't think he has much left, but until I see the drop off, you have to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Yeah, he's kind of like the Braves. Until the witch is dead you can't bet against him. I just can't let my self think good thoughts about Bonds.

I've never said I liked Bonds, but he's been the best hitter I've ever watched play. Until he retires or is healthy and unproductive, I'm still saying he's the biggest offensive force in the game.

And regardless of our feelings about him, my guess is you'd take him on the Cards for one year just as I would take him on the Cubs.

Oh, and the best player in baseball makes about 25M a year, not 14.2

I'll give you that one.

Pujols=Best Hitter

ARod=Best Player

Has Barry Bonds retired?

Until he does, he is clearly the best hitter in baseball.

Bonds= Best hitter

Arod= Best player

I think that most of us forgot about Bonds, because he didn't play (much) this year. But you're right, he's the best.

I'm still waiting for the argument that makes A-rod better than Pujols.

Think the Cards could be in play for the Sammy Sosa free agent sweepstakes?

You really think there's going to be a sweepstakes for Sosa's services?

I wouldn't be shocked to see him go unsigned....

My guess is that he plays in Japan next year.

With McGwire, like a circus act. :D

Was Raffy ever a big draw at the gate? I doubt anyone ever said, let's go to the ballpark to see Palmeiro play. They did that for Sosa and McGwire.

When Raffy was in Texas, Pudge and Juan were bigger draws than Raffy. Hell, Ranger fans liked Rusty Greer better than Raffy.

I think Marquis will be traded in the offseason. The stretch this year when he didn't win for a month and a half and seemed virtually uncoachable (kept abandoning his sinker) and his comments over being left off the playoff rotation have put him in LaRussa and Duncan's doghouse.

I'd like to think that the Cards have some money to spend with record attentance this season, 5 playoff games, and increased revenue from the new stadium. The owners said they would put that revenue into the team on the field, we'll see if they keep their word.

I think they sign A.J. Burnett, not Giles, and trade Marquis for a young outfielder, perhaps somebody from Texas or Toronto but I really don't know.

Grudz comes back. Sanders comes back on a one year deal. (he was having a 30-30 season before he broke his leg in a collision)

Carpenter

Mulder

Burnett

Suppan

Reyes

Eckstein

Edmonds

Pujols

Rolen

Sanders

Somebody

Grudz

Molina

Izzy, Flores, Wainwright, Thompson . . .

More than Marquis' bad season is the fact that Walt doesn't do FA's. He doesn't like to commit to big fa contracts. Marquis will be dealt for an Of'er.

If I were STL, I'd look into Howry and Giles (see if you can trade for Vernon Wells, Austin Kearns, etc.). I'd look for a medium-tier FA starting pitcher (Paul Byrd) just in case Anthony Reyes gets hurt again. And I'd trade Jason Marquis.

EDIT: The Cards probably need a LOOGY with Ray King sucking and demanding a trade.

If the Cards don't want Marquis for the price that he'll command this year, what makes you think that another team will, and that they'll be willing to give up something of value for him?

Because other teams need starting pitching. You don't think a team like the Devil Rays, Reds, etc wouldn't want Marquis for around 6 mil?

I could see the Reds doing that, but not the Devil Rays. Even the Pirates or Padres

I doubt the Reds want another guy capable of allowing 40 home runs in that band box. Especially for 6 million.

I think they learned their lesson with Eric Milton.
