I see Edmonds going to the Yankees for some reason.

hmmm. Interesting. I don't see that unless it's for young pitching or maybe Cano +.

Edmonds is a fan favorite, and Walt would have to pull a bigtime trade to sell that one in St. Louis. I know Cub fans in general hate him, and I can see why, but he has been at the center of some great Cardinal moments.

That said, if you can get a high return for him, now is the time to do it.

Edmonds has a "limited" no-trade claus in his contract.

I also think his contract is up after 2006 (with a team option for 2007), so I wouldn't be devastated if the Cards try to get something for him. He'd be extremely hard to replace, however.

What I have says he has a 23 team no-trade clause. Who knows who the 7 teams are he'd approve a trade to. We also don't know if he gets to change that list every year or if it's set in stone at the time of the signing.

My understanding is that he gets to submit a new list each year. He doesn't seem like the type of guy to me that would be content playing for the Yankees, but who knows.

I think Reggie will be back for one more year. We'll resign Gruz.

Morris is gone, but we'll replace him by finding an aging arm that we'll turn around.

Oh and we'll sign Giles for 3\39* 8)

*

3/39 will not get it done with Giles.

Considering he's 35 years old, I think it will easily get it done. I could be wrong.

Heck, the best player in baseball (Pujols) only makes 14.2 mil per year. You think Giles is worth that kind of money?

But I thought Pujols gave a hometown discount ;)

Seriously though, Pujols's contract bought out arbitration years and gave him long term stability, it's apples to oranges.

Oh, and the best player in baseball makes about 25M a year, not 14.2

It's not whether he's worth it. It's a weak FA market. Giles, Furcal, Millwood, and Burnett are about the best out there.

Pujols didn't sign his contract in an open market situation, so I don't think that's comparable at all.

My guess is Giles will get a 4 year deal that averages around 12 million a year. He might would sign with S.D. for less than that (maybe 3/37-3/38), but I think that with the number of teams that will show interest, the bidding will easily go 4/48 or maybe higher.

For a lot of teams, the drop off from Giles to the rest of the pack is steep. Those teams needing an impact bat will all look to Giles first.

I think you might be right, but for that ticket price I hope the Cards are smart enough to take a pass.

As a Cubs fan I would hope that you folks don't want Hendry to make a preasure signing like that. Furcal is a perfect fit.

Just the opposite. I might have agreed that I wanted the Cubs to take a pass on that after 2003, but the window is closing. Screw the future, we still have the core of Wood, Zambrano, Prior, Lee, and Ramirez to build around. Giles could be the missing piece. I can easily see the Cardinals passing on Giles. First their payroll is projected about 15 million or so less, so that's a big chunk for them. But as I've proposed already, if I'm Hendry, I make Giles an offer he can't refuse. I put 4/50 on the table with a fifth year at 10 million with a 2 million buy-out. He'd end up being guaranteed 52 million, which if he's still productive in the final year ends up a 5/60 deal. He won't get better than that from anyone else in my opinion.

I know Hendry won't be that agressive, and I lament that fact.

I'll give you that one.

Pujols=Best Hitter

ARod=Best Player

Eh......... Pujols' VORP and Win Shares were both slightly better (or right even with) A-rod, and Pujols is 5 years younger.

I'd take Pujols.

The best hitter when healthy is still Barry Bonds.

The best hitter this season was Derrek Lee.

The best player over the last five years is Rodriguez.

1) I agree.

2) I agree.

3) I don't have 5-year splits, but the 3 year splits show that Pujols has been quite a bit better than A-rod over the last 3 years offensively. Probably enough to make up for A-rod's defensive value.

The Cards need the USC Reyes to come in as the #5 and do well as there will be a dumb team to overspend on Morris.

I think they need a dominant set-up guy, Dotel on the mend might be a sleeper possibility they might look at for the stretch run. If not, there are plenty of legit relievers out there.

If I was STL, I'd look into getting younger in the OF. They could get Giles to improve on their strong offense and go with someone like Rodriguez in LF.

Bring back Grudzielanek and try and win it all next year.

You don't believe in Rodriguez, do you?

Don't you think that regular playing time would open him up for some major exploitation by the NL pitchers?

I love Rodriguez but I wouldn't trust him to start LF for us next year. I do worry about the age of our OF however this team is in a good position to win a championship next year therefore if signing an old fart like Giles puts us over the top then so be it.

Sometimes, you have to run the risk if put your eggs into one basket (Giles). If Jocketty wants to try and squeeze something out of Hidalgo, go for it, but I think the odds are equal with someone like Rodriguez.

Barry Bonds is washed up. (No more magic cream)

Lee had a better season, but Pujols is miles ahead the last 5 years.

ARod may be the best player of this generation.

I read Jacque Jones ( :x !)is on our radar to. That's the guy I think would be a good fit of the Cubs

ARod puts up Pujols like #s, and he's a Shortstop! Yeah, I know he's playing 3rd, but I still think he's the best SS on the Yankees...
