Will these guys be available? I haven't heard anything yet. I want Giles but it would be nice to have some other options, if only to leverage Giles' price downward.

Matsui is a FA, IIRC.

Is he open-minded about leaving NY? I can see him wanting to stay there because it is much more of a multi-lingual city than Chicago. In Chicago you pretty much hear English, Spanish, and Polish and little else.

I don't know how Sheff feels after the 2nd postseason with the Yankmes, but he was quoted he would retire a Bronx Bomber. Although he is on my wish list, I highly doubt he will be playing in Cubbie Blue anytime soon.

Zilla on the other hand is an interesting option, he is loved by Yankee fans and I would imagine George would like to keep him....

Although 8 men left on base in game 5 doesn't help the love fest!

I take it you don't spend much time in Chinatown.

We do have a Chinatown but it's very small, and you just don't hear Chinese on the street outside of Chinatown, whereas you are likely to hear Spanish or Polish anywhere in the city. Greektown is cool, but it's pretty small too, and you just don't hear Greek being spoken around town very often. I'm not putting down Chicago, but of all the big cities I've been in Chicago has always struck as the least cosmopolitan, which is probably part of why it feels midwestern and not like a baby New York.

Not that Chinatown would make a difference to Hideki since he is Japanese, but we have a good amount of people who are Japanese in Chicago. I'm Greek and can tell you there's more places to go to than just Greek town if you're Greek. I'm sure it works the same way for every nationality.

Does anyone think either of these players will be leaving NY? I don't. Steinbrenner might blow a gasket and fire everybody on his coaching staff, but he probably knows that Matsui and Sheffield aren't the reasons the Yankees didn't win it all this year, and he won't object to bringing them back (and neither will Cashman, or, if he's replaced, whoever his replacement is). I also don't think either player has any desire to leave, especially when nobody's going to outbid the Yankees.

The only scenario I can see either player not in New York pinstripes is if the Yankees try and move ARod to the Red Sox for Manny, which I seriously doubt would ever happen.

Then again, there were rumors of Boston's interest in Giles, which would be odd since they have 2 corner OF's under contract right now (Nixon and Manny). So you never know...

BTW, per the termsof Matsui's contract the Yankees can't even offer him Arbitration, so he needs to be signed by whatever that deadline is (Dec. 7th?).

If I'm Hendry, I bid on him if only to drive his cost up. Dump him in RF if you get him.

how about a three way with boston and San Diego?

Like a sign and trade type thing with:

San Diego: signs Giles and trades him to Boston

Boston: send Manny to Cubs

Cubs: send Patterson and bartosh to Padres

hehe might have to come up with a slightly better package than that but what do you all think?

Nixon can't hit lefties worth a lick and needs to be platooned.

Again, I will not at all be surprised if Manny is traded to the Mets for some package involving either Mike Cameron or Carlos Beltran along with some prospects (with Lastings Milledge at the top of Boston's wishlist).

Why would they platoon Giles with Nixon?

No way either of them leaves. The yankees make so much money off of broadcasting games in Japan.

With a cable contract in Japan, Hideki brings the Yanks more money than they pay him. He also benefits by exposure in his home country with lucrative endorsements, etc. that add to his overall income.

With respect to Shefield, he threw a fit earlier this year when there were trade rumors. He basically created his own no trade clause saying that he would refuse to play for anyone if they traded for him.

Sheff is a crybaby and a cancer, and has caused controversy pretty much wherever he has been.

I'd love Matsui (hell, any of those Japanese superstars. Hendry needs to tap that market), but I very much doubt the Yanks will let him get away.

I'm pretty sure that MLB as a whole owns all international broadcasting rights. It wouldn't surprise me if Hideki brings in some significant advertising dollars, though.

I'm pretty sure Beltran has a no-trade clause. So he probably wouldn't be included in any deal for Manny.

Just because he has a no trade clause doesnt mean he wont accept a trade. I'd accept a trade from the mets to the bosox, wouldnt you?
