Any thoughts on bringing him back on a 2 year deal or so? Could be a very solid set-up guy for Dempster or is he way way way too old?

Just curious.

I think the only way we get him is a 2 year deal and he is a very reliable set-up man.

Doesn't have to close this time around as we got Dempster to do that.

how about howry to set up & eyre as the other lefty in the pen. both are ex sox players who had very good years last year. i would pass on flash gordon myself.

I think it's time to have some of these young guns step up and pitch well out of the pen. Granted, Baker manages a pen as well as the government manages our money, but I think some of these guys have got to step up.

I think I'm with you here, 'Cuse. I want to see Hendry bring in one veteran reliever, but apart from whoever that is I expect good things out of Wuertz, Novoa and Ohman. Sooner our later our vaunted young arms need to give us some production.

Of course, as you noted, it would be nice for Baker to not nuke these guys by July 1st, as he did with Wuertz, Farnsworth and Borowski....

IMO Gordon is a ticking timebomb, I mean how long can a guy in his late 30s get abused so badly before he blows up? Im all for bringing in a top set up man and Gordon has a big upside, but theres the chance of us getting nothing. Id rather go more safe with an Indian as some one else mentioned or some one a bit younger yet experienced. And as others have said, thats where I'd stop. I'd fill the rest with youngsters, we have plenty that have just as good a chance as any other guy that wed pay a million bucks for.

From Espn (Of course, an article on the Yankees offseason)

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/playoffs2005/columns/story?columnist=klapisch_bob&id=2187879:

The bullpen? Gordon might've pitched himself out of pinstripes by failing to hold down the Angels in Game 3, retiring none of the four batters he faced in the seventh inning. Gordon's postseason anxiety became obvious in 2004, when the Red Sox scored six runs in 6 2/3 innings against him in the ALCS, so unnerved the right-hander reportedly threw up in the bullpen before appearing in Games 4 and 5.

No thanks

I don't get why we traded him for crap on a stick the first time.

Because his famed forkballs turned out to be as straight as Hawkins' fastballs. That re-tread should NOT be brought back to the Cub organization.

At the time of the trade he was more hittable than previously, but it was only like 25 innings. Gordon's been a pretty good reliever for a very long time. I don't know how much he has left in the tank, especially after this year, but he's not a re-tread by any means.
