On this day 21 years ago, Leon Durham set the trend of Cubs and former Cubs 1B having balls go thru their legs during pivotal moments in the playoffs.

The 1st of many heartbearks would follow for me having adopted the Cubs.

And thanks to Buckner 2 years later, Leon avoids getting the same treatment Buckner did.

We were up two games to nothing.........

Back then a lot of fans were just happy to have won the division, so Durham wasn't going to get the "Bartman" treatment. I do seem to remember he did get some hate mail, though. I also remember in 1985 or 1986 his brother dying and I don't think he ever really recovered from that.

I'm incredibly happy I wasn't alive for the collapse in '84. I don't think I've ever heard my dad talk about it and not go into a profanity laced tirade. I can't imagine what it's like for those of you who witnessed 1969, 1984, AND 2003.

The 84 series, I was a young pup, but I remember my grandfather going on a profanity laced warpath that day. Something along the lines of losing a big money bet.

Then the 2003 series, well, I went on a profanity laced tirade, that's for sure.

In 2003, I went on a profanity-lace tirade as well. I think I destroyed some furniture too. It's kind of hazy :)

But, on a positive note, I knew we would lose game 7 after the game 6 fiasco, so I put some cash on the Marlins (Cubs were favored) and came away with a goodly amount of extra spending money.

Some of us just hate san diego forever and can't enjoy being there.

OMG I missed Leon Durham day!! Leon was my favorite Cubs player for a long time as a kid for no particular reason. I remember being very upset with Mark Grace for a long time because he took Leon's job.

I got over it.

The Bull was always my favorite too. Didnt Palmerio take his place, not Gracie! Gracie took over after Palmerio. Anyways, as a kid i had that SI cover with the Bull on it hanging in my room for several years.

I was pretty young too, but I know 1984 has stayed with my father. In 2003 when the Cubs were up 2-1 over the Marlins, his pessimism drove him to say "Somebody's gonna be the Bull this year."

You could be right about Palmerio, but I wasn't exactly avid back then, so Grace was the victim of my misplaced rage...heh.

I hope whoever is playing 2B for the Cubs in '07 doesn't make Graffanino an afterthought.

I was bartending at a sportsbar during the melt down in 2003. Customers were afraid to ask me for anything for the rest of the night. I actually got in trouble for my bad service that night, not to mention my less than friendly attitude.

Ouch, that must had sucked. I learned the hard way to not be working while there is a Cubs postseason game going on as well.

I hope that sometime in the near future the Cubs will have a postseason game for me to take off work for.
