The Tigers fired Alan Trammel today; there's speculation the sights are set on Leyland.

Link.

Alan Trammell is out and Jim Leyland might be in as manager of the Detroit Tigers.

Trammell was fired Monday after three seasons in which he failed to turn around a franchise without a winning record since 1993.

``You will not find a more dedicated, hardworking and respected individual that cares more about the Tigers and his coaching staff,'' Tigers president Dave Dombrowski said in a statement. ``However, for the Tigers to reach the next level, I feel it is appropriate to make a change at this time.''

Leyland, a former Florida, Pittsburgh and Colorado manager, said the Tigers called him Monday morning to set up an interview with him on Monday evening.

The managerial mery-go-round has begun. I really wish we'd be taking a ride on this one this year, but that's probably more than I can hope for.

Too bad. I kinda liked Alan Trammel. Isn't his fault that his two big FA singings this year turned out to be injured.

Similar to Lloyd Mcclendon. It is hard to say if they can manage or not. It is hard to believe that the Detroit Tigers and the Red Wings are owned by the same guy. Even with the Salary Cap the Wings look like a well run competent organization. The Tigers look completely clueless.

I agree. They hired Trammell to resurrect the Tigers ORG, but gave him a team so bad---in his first yr---that team usa softball team could had wiped them clean. I can't believe Detroit would scapegoat Trammell, even tho it WAS THEIR MISTAKE to begin with.

One of my favorite images from the 2003 season was a picture of Trammel with his hands up at his temples and screaming something at someone on the field. It's always looked like a man on the edge of a nervous breakdown, and it summed up the Tigers 2003 pretty well for me. If I can find the picture, I'll post a link to it later.

Anyway, I have a hard time blaming Trammell for not 'improving' his club, when he was mostly handed crud and told to field it.

Trammell did improve the Tigers. Over half of their payroll is tied up in Percival, YOung, Ordonez, IRod and Higginson. I heard alot of Cub fans clamouring to pick up about 3 of these guys over the last couple of off-seasons. I am sure glad we didnt.

Speaking of McClendon, the Detroit Sports Report says he might be hired as a bullpen coach.

Also, according to Danny Knobler, who writes for the Grand Rapids Press/Mlive.com:

you're likely to see a lot of the guys who have worked for Jim in the past: Rich Donnelly, Tommy Sandt, maybe Milt May, maybe Larry Rothschild
