I'm not advocating resigning him. But what are some of the ideas of what will happen to him next year? Stay in the AL so he can DH? Any teams that might sign a stopgap OF? Cardinals? Just curious.

Word is that he'll either retire or go play in Japan.

As much as it pains me to say it, Sammy doesn't have it anymore.

As much as I'd love to see him have a pretty decent final year and have a last hurrah of sorts, it won't happen. I hope he hangs it up and retires with some dignity.

Considering his shrunken body and minuscule stats I think the thing Sammy doesn't have this year is steroids...

Like I said before, his best option would be Rockies. Coors would be perfect for him to come back offensively. If not Coors, then another great hitters park . .

Please explain why it is out-of-bounds to suggest that he was on steroids.

In light of the fact that he is a confirmed cheater (cork) and liar (game 162 a year ago), I'd say its perfectly reasonable to do so.

I don't think it's out of bounds to SUGGEST it. But some people report it as if it's a proven and confirmed fact. And it's in EVERY SINGLE SAMMY THREAD!!

He didn't test positive, so he's innocent of all charges. Not saying he never did it, but I won't believe he did until some sort of proof comes out.

People seem to let thier dislike of him color thier common sense judgement.

People don't seem to understand that as a player gets older, his skills tend to decline. Sammy is older. His skills are declining. It happens to everyone except for CONFIRMED steroids takers like those in San Fransisco.

As I've said before, I'm damned glad that trials aren't held in the court of public opinion, because some people just seem to be out for blood in some cases.

I think it's pretty unnecessary to make a comment like that in a thread discussing where Sammy might play next year. It has absolutely no relevance at all.

Its absolutely relevant considering the effect on his performance. Is his age and slowing bat also irrelevant?

Steroid user or no, Sammy doesn't have what it takes to be a starting OF on any major league team for the price he'll want.

Japan? Let's hope not. I think Sammy is too proud for that. He might also be too proud to retire...and too proud to accept the league minimum (which is all he's worth). Quite the conundrum...

This thread is about where Sammy might play next year... what do steroids have to do with that? Sorry, I just don't see any logic in mentioning roids EVERY time Sosa's name is brought up on here.

How is it not relevant? Discussing his future obviously must include what kind of numbersyou can expect from him. If he's not on steroids (and he used to be), a team should be worried about that, since it means he's probably worth next-to-nothing.

And, of course steroids are going to come up when we talk about him. It's a very defining issue for him. If someone is so worried about a player getting bad-mouthed they should avoid any topic that concerns that player. I've got no problem with sammy-lovers or loyalists of any other kind, but "don't mention 'roids" complaints are as annoying and unproductive as "he is too on 'roids" statements. And you're right, there's no proof, so it's a circular and unwinnable argument. Let the "sammy-bashers" say their piece and then you can say yours, but we can all be civil about it.

As for the topic of discussion. I predict that Sammy will wait a few months, and then very quietly retire.

Ignoring the steroids discussion......

For a team with some cash, it might not be bad to sign him to a one-year deal. He'll probably come extremely cheap, and you're basically hoping that he can regain his old stroke. If your team is out of the race, then send him along to the Yankees for a prospect. If he repeats this year, the investment in him will be small.

Yeah, he'll be cheap. You can DH him. Make sure you have a short LF porch.

Get your 600 and retire with dignity, Sammy. As soon as you hit it, tip your cap and call it a career.

I think Japan is a viable option for Sammy. He loves being the center of attraction and playing in Japan would certainly afford him that luxury.

Proof, please.

Sorry, I wasn't really clear at all. I meant that to sound more hypothetical. But that's my point. It's a reasonable suspicion, thus teams looking to sign him should consider it, and thus so should he.

I'm not condemning him, I'm really not. But it has to be mentioned.

Sammy sayonara?

If Sammy Sosa wants his largest paycheck in 2006, rather than attempting to reach 600 home runs, he could consider playing in Japan.

The buzz in the Far East says the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks will make a run at Sosa.

It could be a good one-year plan for Sosa, who turns 37 next month, to rehabilitate his swing and his character. Or it could be a last-ditch effort to make some dough.

Do they test for steroids in Japan?

My guess is that Sammy's ample ego won't allow him to retire into obscurity a la McGwire. He'll hand around, and if Japan is the only option, he'll go there.

Dignity went flying out the window about the same time time the cork went flying out of Sammy's bat.

Come on now, we all know that was just a "batting practice" bat..........
