heh...len says to prevent the cubs from signing another starter, rusch, williams, and hill need to make the cubs' decision by pitching well. that will be especially tough for hill, and his 2 innings last month.

I'm curious as to what Jerome Williams' trade value will look like in the offseason. Considering his age, stuff, and experience, I'd have to think that he might be quite helpful for the Cubs in acquiring a big name in a trade.

He could be used as a trading chip or we could keep him as the fifth starter. He's lowered his ERA to 4.18 so far with today's effort and that's not bad for a fifth starter.

His ERA with the Cubs has been pretty nice, too. Everyone knows that he was out of shape coming into the season and still isn't at his best in terms of being healthy, but he's done quite well with the Cubs and could make a nice addition to any rotation. If he could be better down the road, teams might have plenty of interest in his services.

With the Cubs' perceived glut of potential starters, Williams might be expendable if he can help land the Cubs some one to either really bolster the offense or the starting rotation.

3.71 ERA and 1.31 WHIP with the Cubs.

EDIT: His VORP projected over a full season is better than the likes of Weaver, Lieber, Suppan, and David Wells.

I agree that he could be moved and wouldn't oppose moving him in the right deal. (I proposed one in the Castillo rumor trade in which Williams would be moved.)

I'm really hoping the Cubs can win tommorow with a Phillie win on top of that. Who would the Astros have to pitch if they had a 1-game playoff with Philly? Astacio? Rodriguez?

This is what I'm hoping for. Since my "I want the Yankees shut out of the playoffs" fantasy is messed up (thank you very much, Red Sox and Indians), I want the Cubs to play spoiler. I want a damned 1-game playoff!!

Obviously, the Cubs sensing their fans desire for a Phillies WC entry will give their fans one last kick in the balls to close out the year and lose tomorrow. Most likely it will be a cruel loss too. In fact, in a way it would be fitting. No Bears tomorrow, so you know I'll be watching.

I'm guessing that if we do lose today it will come on a Dempster blown save so poor Cubs' fans have to question whether or not his new contract is worth it all offseason long.
