Well I read in the Post Dispatch that the Cardinals have invited, and he's accepted, Mark McGwire to attend with other former Cardinals on the final weekend of the season at Busch Stadium. So my question is when he's announced would you boo, cheer or stay quiet? It's not surprising that he'd accept since he probably knows the majority of people will cheer for him like they did in 1998. What astounds me is if Garry Templeton came back he'd be booed to no end, and all he did was flip off the fans. Funny, but who deserves more of an ovation from a baseball fan - Mark McGwire or Jose Canseco?

Golf clap.

You were probably joking here, but that's what I would do. No standing O or other craziness. It's not the time for booing. Whatever he did with steroids, he was a huge part of Busch stadium and that's what the last weekend at Busch is, celebrating Busch Stadium. I respect him for having the guts to come back.

If he were still playing and at bat, similar to Palmeiro after just getting busted, I'd boo. JMO

First off, I'm not here to talk about the past. But I will. I just think of what I know about my fellow Cardinals fans that the man will get an unnecessarily long standing O. Mark it down. It will happen. A couple of people will start out booing and then the majority will take it upon themselves to drown them out with a huge standing O.

Myself (I will be there), I'll clap respectfully because he was a big part of my early teenage years and I do still like the guy and how great he was to the fans of St. Louis.

I will be clapping and since I will already be standing for all of the other former players, I shall remain standing while I clap. I certainly would expect a Renteria like reception for him...your going to hear some Boo's but they will then be drawned out by the cheers.

I honestly can't believe just how much the Cardinal fans have turned on Big Mac though.

Hell, I think Cards fans would cheer me if I wondered onto the field, if I was wearing Cardinal Red.

Sure I would cheer if a Cub fan was converted. That would be a great day for you and you would deserve to be rewarded.

As for Big Mac, the fans will keep it respectful and give him a warm welcoming back to St. Louis. I imagine that every player will get a warm greeting from the fans. This is a great moment in Cardinal baseball.

I would clap if I were there. First of all, unlike with other players there is no proof Mac did juice, though I think he surely did. Secondly, it is hypocritical for the fans who were lapping up the 98' spectacle to turn on Mac and others in some kind of self-righteousness. The fact is he and Sammy saved baseball that year, we needed him to be on steriods that year, and we rooted for him even though he looked like some freakish popeye. Who am I to look back now and judge him? He deserves a respectful applause and I think that is what he will get.

I think some of my contemporaries are underestimating the cheesiness of Cardinal Nation. He will get an extended standing O.

Sadly, I agree. I think you'll hear some boos then some others will feel obligated to drown out the boos by standing and cheering. Just as some other poster stated. I can't believe McGwire retires by sending a fax to ESPN, not the Cardinals, then does everything but admit to using steroids and the fans will be totally forgiving. One guy who should be upset is Tony LaRussa who went way out of his way defending McGwire throughout the whole Canseco allegation, only to find out that it's extremely likely that McGwire did take steroids. Yet if Tino Martinez came back he would get booed.

McGwire brought Cardinal fans FAR more joy than misery. It's not even close. TLR and most Cardinal fans also know that McGwire isn't perfect, but he's also not a monster. 90% of Cardinal fans realize that, and they'll stand and roar for him. Larussa will hug him and smile from ear to ear. Guarantee it.

Let me also add that if Tino Martinez or Gary Templeton were introduced as former Cardinals, they'd be loudly cheered, also.

No way.

Guarantee it. There would be a few exceptions, but the boo's probably wouldn't even be heard through the cheers.

Tino was booed this season and it wasn't because he is with the Yankees.

Tell you what. Do a poll among your Cardinal fan brethren and ask them about Templeton and I bet you there will be more saying they'd boo him than cheer. And if they choose to cheer him it's only because if it weren't for him Ozzie wouldn't be a Cardinal. Cardinal ownership wouldn't even invite him to Busch Stadium I bet.

No. But the "best fans in baseball" would never boo unless they meant it.

Uh-oh dalgreen, you brought up the 'best fans in baseball' thingy. Please, don't go there.

Tino would get booed regardless.

The whole " best fans in baseball" thing has been blown out of proportion. Its impossible to say who has the best fans in baseball. I have a number of friends who are cubs fans and are way better baseball fans then alot of Cardinals fans.

Also where does it say a good fan cant boo someone. Templeton openly disrespected Cardinals fans and they have the right to boo him. I personally wouldnt boo Tino just because he had a few bad years here. If i felt he didnt try i would but I dont think its the case. So you can be good fans and still boo if you think it is necessary as long as you dont cross the line with the booing.

I think Tino got a raw deal here. When he was signed, I figured you'd gotten a 20-25 hr and 75-80 rbi guy. And that's what he did when he was here. I think some fans thought since he was a former Yankee that meant he was the one missing link to the World Series and not good starting pitching like you had last year and this year. I'm not a booer, but fans do have the right to boo. I just don't know why one would boo Tino or Templeton (who only flipped off the fans behind the dugout and not the entire stadium) if they were brought back but wouldn't boo McGwire.
