CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs infielder Ronny Cedeno suffered a hairline fracture in the fifth metacarpal of his left hand when he was hit by a pitch and is likely done for the season.

Cedeno was hit by a fastball from San Francisco's Brad Hennessey on Saturday in the second inning. He stayed in the game, but had to leave after he was unable to handle a throw at second base.

"I didn't see the ball," Cedeno said Monday of Hennessey's pitch. "It was 91 mph, and I'm trying to stop my swing and the ball hit me in the hand.

"I was trying to stay in the game," he said. "I couldn't squeeze my hand -- it was very sore."

Cedeno was examined by a hand specialist on Monday in Chicago.

"I'm done for the season," Cedeno said.

Not according to Cubs manager Dusty Baker.

"Possibly. Not definitely," Baker said. "He's done for a couple weeks. If we get in the playoffs, he could be healed by then. We'll see.

"It's a bad blow," Baker said. "It seems like we've had to deal with a lot of injuries this year."

Cedeno expected to be able to play in winter ball in Venezuela, and will see action both at second and shortstop to prepare for next season. If all goes well, he could be in the Cubs' regular lineup.

"I need to play every day," he said about winter ball. "I need the experience for next year. I want to be here next year.

"It's very sad for me," Cedeno said of the injury. "I'm trying to help the team. I'm doing my best. It's something that happens in the game."

Cedeno hit .300 in 40 games with the Cubs and impressed Baker.

"He's got some skills, definitely," Baker said. "He's got great range, quickness. His bat has really improved over the last year and a half. Fundamental stuff? There's still a few things he needs to work on. He'll probably get a pretty good shot of that here."

Easier to compliment someone you dont have to worry about playing, I guess. He still couldnt resist throwing in a little jab at the end.

Of course Dusty is going to say good things because he knows Cedeno is done for the year. That wasy people wont say hes too negative yet he still knows thathe doesnt have to use Cedeno as an option anymore. More of Macias and Neifi for all of us to drink a beer to.

I wish Patterson had this same attitude.

That's how I see it too. Dusty can shower Cedeno with compliments now that he can't play: "Gee, Cedeno's great, and I'd love to play him, but unfortunately he's injured. Darn the luck!". Murton won't get as many compliments because he has committed the sin of staying healthy.

Right, Dusty...."Um, yeah, the dude was gonna play every game from here on out, man! Now he's hurt, that's just society...it's like hooking a bass with a wiggler on 30 lb. test but the loons scare him off."

I'm no Dusty lover, but the piling on is out of control. Even when Dusty compliments a young player, he gets ripped to shreds.

If you put him the man in a no-win situation, it shouldn't be a surprise he doesn't win.

As for the little "jab" about fundamentals - that is just Dusty's style. Not saying I like it, but it isn't surprise, nor is it even a meaningful criticism. He will say that about every young player because generally speaking it is true. Like most people, Dusty probably has one specific instance in his memory that sticks out where Cedeno made a mental mistake, and it is driving his judgement/comment at that moment.

I think it would be nice to hear him generalize less, but the fact that he is high on both Cedeno's offense and his defense is a good thing for fans who want RC to start next year, and that is what we should be taking to heart from the comments.

The jab about fundamentals wouldn't be so bad if he didn't routinely stand up for his veterans making the same (if not worse) mistakes. Alou's awful baserunning last year comes to mind. He handles vets and rookies differently, there's no two ways about it.

I dont want to defend Dusty too much but before the game on Thurs or Fri, Brenly asked what were the positives of the season besides Lee and Aram. The very first thing that Dusty said was the play of Cedeno, Murton, Wuertz, Ohman and Novoa. Not making it up. He said a couple of other things and than brought up Neifi.

why are the cubs talking about switching cedeno to 2b from ss? in the pregame show they mentioned he might go to winter ball & play 2b. with ep doing so well in the minors and cedeno hittng well and having great d at ss, they could be the starting middle if after 2006 when walker leaves. :?:

It's true Cedeno could play SS next year, but say we take Walkers option (which we should) and either resign Nomar or sign Furcal with Neifi possibly going elsewhere to start for more money, Cedeno then becomes your main MI backup. He's not necessarily going to learn 2B to start there next year, I don't think it necessarily means he's out of the race to start at SS next year.

I'd much rather have Todd Walker at 2B than Ronny Cedeno, though.

me too. i just hope they go with cedeno @ ss instead of spending big $ on furcal or nomar for several years. i just dont see the point in messing with the kid seeing as how he has come so far in only a few years. with aram @3b, cedeno @ ss ep @ 2b & lee @ 1b i see a very good if for many years to come.
