Two gems from Bruce

My favorite quote:

The Cubs’ approach to offense was on display for everybody to see in the ninth inning of Friday night’s 2-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants.

With the Cubs down by that score, Jerry Hairston led off with a single. Three pitches later, the game was over. Neifi Perez popped out on the first pitch, as did Derrek Lee. The game ended when Jeromy Burnitz grounded out on the first pitch.

Since that’s the approach Cubs manager Dusty Baker seems to favor, he didn’t fault his hitters. He credited Giants rookie pitcher Matt Cain, who tossed a complete-game 2-hitter.

Thank you, Bruce!

Cubs succeed when Murton, Cedeno both start

Now, of course, that's because Dusty has used them only in these games where they 'had the best chance to succeed.' 1) If they don't play it's because they wouldn't have done well that day. 2) If they do play and do well, it's Dusty's genius spot usage. 3) If they play and don't do well, then return to step one with renewed fervor. So in the end, Dusty is always right.

“Well, he was throwing well before the ninth,” was Baker’s summation. “The young man threw an outstanding game. He had a real good fastball. He was locating it on the outside when he needed to. We heard he had good stuff. They weren’t lying. They’ve got a special young man right there.”

Oh joy, the Don Baylor "tip your cap" attitude has returned to the Cubs. Excuse me while I beat myself over the head with a tire iron...

Murton and Cedeno haven't been around long enough to have the Cubs offensive approach, as described in the other article, beaten into them.

Both Murton and Cedeno made mistakes in Thursday night’s 5-3 victory over the Giants. Murton failed to throw home on a sacrifice fly with Giants pitcher Noah Lowry on third base. Cedeno was thrown out at third base on a groundball to short. Interestingly, Cedeno threw out Giants veteran J.T. Snow on a similar play.

“We made a couple of young mistakes, but I guess that comes with young players,” Baker said after the game.

Interesting he didn't mention his new toy patterson (effectively a veteran in dusty's eyes, getting picked off first.

God I hate him.

yep, forget the fact that Cain only threw 105 pitches. THIS IS A VARIABLE THAT YOU, AS THE MANAGER, CAN AFFECT, DUSTY!

but nope, he'll just sit back and watch us flail away at everything under the sun. maybe if cain had thrown more pitches, dusty you genius, he'd be (gasp) tired in the 9th.

please, someone, realize what is wrong with this manager and fire him. hendry should be gone for the fact that dusty's still here.

Since I refuse to watch this worthless team, I found another comment about the past few games very interesting.

Apparently Cedeno needed to sit after being thrown out at third. A bad mistake, however, if it's negative reinforcement, then why wasn't Neifi yanked after his error caused a Cubs loss?
