Unfortunately, some team will give Burnett a 5 to 6 year deal. Given AJB's past health and the Cubs history, theCubs won't offer more than 3 or 4 years. All this stuff about the Cubs going hard after Burnett is reminiscent to the stuff about the Cubs going hard after Beltran. Essentially, it's pr spin to get the fans all fired up. Hey they're trying.

And it's darn good thing the Cubs didn't go hard after Beltran, and if Burnett wants a 5-6 year deal, the Cubs shouldn't go hard after him either.

At least his agent isn't Boras.

The difference is....the Cubs have the money to land AJ Burnett if they want. BUT the Cubs have bigger issues to deal with over landing another starter.

FWIW, Levine mentioned on SportsNight (CSN) that the Cubs would be going hard after Burnett and quite possibly Furcal too. It was within the context that the Cubs and White Sox would be competing for some of the same free agents this offseason.

I wouldn't mind the move at all. Our SP could become a murderers row again with Z, Prior, Wood, Burnett, and Maddux. (Maddux WOULD be way overpaid, but for a 5th he's not that bad...)

Plus, I suppose we could then use Jerome and a few other guys as trade bait to fill the OF needs.

With the injury histories of Wood and Prior, I think the Cubs need to hold on to guys like Williams and Hill.

Haven't we learned? If Cubs sign someone with any injury history at all it'll come back to bite them. Burnett would be a very nice addition but, put it down now, if he signs with the Cubs, he won't make it out of ST on the active roster. Of course, if he signs with the Cards, he'll be sprinkled with Magic Baseball Dust, make 30-35 starts and win 20-25 games.
