I'd be very happy if the Cubs don't sign (read: overpay) for the overrated Furcal. I'd rather see Cedeño start or Garciappara brought back on the cheap with Ronny as the backup.

agree.

spend the money elsewhere or save it for 07.

Agreed. I'd like to see a one year offer extended to Nomar with a low base salary and with a chance to earn several more million if he reaches certain incentives. Cut ties with Neifi, have Cedeno as the backup, and it's a win-win situation for all parties involved... except for Neifi, but who cares about him?

This is the move that makes the most sense to me. Nomar just has too high of a ceiling if he can play 140 or more games. I've been advocating this move for the last month or so and it is good to see others doing the same.

However, this interesting tidbit is from ChicagoSports.com...

"We're very high on Ronny, and I feel if he continues to progress he has a very good shot at playing for us next year," general manager Jim Hendry said.

"He can play either spot. It'd be foolish to start deciding now where he's going to play and who else we might re-sign or not re-sign. But we all feel as an organization that he's ready to be an everyday player."

This is a typical Hendry move. It maximizes his leverage in negotiations with any FA shortstop while also setting the expectation that Cedeno will be seeing greater playing time next season. It also leaves the door open for Nomar to return.

Even with Nomars injuries, I still think he will get some decent offers in the off season because of the lack of SS's coming out so I don't think the Cubs will be able to get him dirt cheap unless he truely loves being in Chicago, which of course could mean that he might sign with the Sox.

IMO....It'll be Perez, Walker and Cedeno in 2006, especially if Baker is back which I expect him to be. The Cubs are going to go after OF's and relief pitchers this off season. Also for a kicker, expect Perez to get a nice raise which should make this board more interesting to say the least.

neifi is going to make $2.5m this year because of all the starts he's been given, right?

wow, that's bad.

real bad.

i really hope someone pulls a bowden and gives him a multi-year deal.

Scanning that list of FA shortstops one name jumps out at me in big bold letters as the starting shorstop for Dusty Baker's 2006 Chicago Cubs.

Rich Aurilia. Ably backed-up by Neifi Perez.

Read it and weep boys...

You'd think the Manager everyone wants to play for would be able to help recruit Furcal. After all, Baker should be good for something, shouldn't he? Edited by gflore34

I would hope Frucal finds somewhere else to play for $8MM+.
