we all have furcal penciled in as starting SS on opening day but what if he re-signs with atlanta under similar terms? i think we have to let nomar walk and give cedeno an extended look.

unfortunately part of whats bad about this year has been we were semi-competitive and havent yet got extended looks at cedeno and murton and havent gotten even a glimpse of injured pie or the forgotten guzman.

part of next year we're going to find out the hardway once again, unless we bring in other quality guys to hold it down. there is the remote possibility that both are studs, but a city as big as chicago cant afford to take that chance. the fanbase is demanding wins NOW.

anyways i think if furcal rejects us, we have to immediately turn our attention to brian giles. sadly, he could be looking at JD Drew money. and sadly, with his OBP i would be willing to go pretty high. i would offer 3-years/$30M to start and 4-years/$40M if san diego matches. yes, that is ivan rodriguez money, but we desperately would need help if furcal spurns us.

lets pray we get one of them.

If Nomar is willing to sign for $2M + incentives, I'd go with Nomar. Cedeno will be around to cover for the likely injury.

Furcal really isn't that great of a SS, not for the money he is likely to command. We can make up more production by splurging on the OF (since our OF has been dismal this year).

Giles will get more than $10M/year.

If we can't get Furcal, give Nomar $3M guarenteed, 5M incentives based on performance, another $3M based on being on the active roster on certain dates or berevment leave. You really don't need dozens of emoticons to validate your point. One will suffice. Thanks!

Hendry has already as much said that Neifi will be back next year to back up in the infield.

What's the problem with Neifi as a backup? He's a solid backup, capable of solid streaks in the short term. It's usually in the long term (like this year b/c of Nomar's injury) that he declines.

A certain manager's use of said infielder is the problem, not Neifi Perez.

guess what "certain manager" will be back to use neifi in the problematic way?

if neifi is signed as a backup next year, he'll still get 2-3 starts a week under dusty.

no, not really. the only reason Neifi started so much is b/c our starter went down for a long period of time. Dusty knows neifi's not a starter on a $100M team. You end up playing what you have. A healthy starter (be it Nomar, Furcal, Cedeno, other) puts Neifi back where he belongs...on the bench.

There have been 134 games this year, and Neifi has played SS for 95. That means 39 games Neifi hasn't been the SS, and he's STARTED at 2B in 16 of those remaining 39. That's basically 3 starts a week at that rate, at second base, his secondary position. There's only been 8 games ALL YEAR that Neifi has not played at all in. Dusty loves putting Neifi in the lineup, and there's no reason to think he won't continue to find ways to put him in there next season.

I dont have Furcal penciled in, I hope he doesnt want to come here. How can the organization be so high on both Neifi and Cedeno, they really need to pick one back up shortstop.

What's the record for errors by a SS?? If Nomar can actually play 130 games next year, he could get it.

Not if Furcal has anything to say about that

Give Nomar a few more games @ SS instead of 3B and he might catch Furcal for the season.

I fail to see how Neifi is going to start so many games with a healthy SS who is on the books for around 8M (Furcal or Garciaparra...the latter with incentives if healthy for the whole season) and a much better hitter in T. Walker at 2B.

If Cedeno is "starting," I can see Dusty pulling his usual garbage with Neifi. We've seen one season of Dusty misusing Neifi in Wrigley. The reason it happened is an injury to Nomar. I don't see any evidence to support the claim that Neifi will start 100+ games next year.

Be careful w/ facts. :D If Nomar, Walker and Ramirez stayed healthy all year, we wouldn't have seen much of Neifi. He's done alright for a backup too. Actually, he's 13th in ops for SS's overall and his defense is quite good. He shouldn't be a whipping boy.

Spin of the day. Dusty's evil!! :o

Bring back Nomar and Walker and yes Nef will get quite a few starts because both will probably miss a good number of games. Bring in Furcal and Nef won't see nearly as much pt.

Jose Valentin is the worst fielding SS of anyone. I think he made 50 errors in 2000 w/ the Sox. People say he has great range and can get to a lot of balls that others can't. To that I say BS, b/c he still throws the ball. He is a horrible fielder. If he can get to so many balls, great, but he should've kept them in his pocket, instead of trying to chuck a throw to 1st to get an out.

walker's going to "miss a good number of games," eh?

yeah, he's so injury prone and all.

I don't disagree that Neifi could have some value (if used properly) as the 25th man on the roster. However, as he is one of Dusty's "toys", you know he won't be used properly. He will be used in situations in which he shouldn't be, taking playing time away from more worthy players.

With any other manager, I wouldn't necessarily mind him as a spot starter and 2b/ss/3b backup, but he'd be a "super sub" under Dusty.

He's gotta go. For the good of the team, he's gotta go.
