I was hoping Macias would be playing CF today so that Baker would somehow have all 4 of his SS in the lineup

Actually, one of the positions Macias doesn't play is SS. He hasn't played there at all as a Cub, and has only about 40 innings logged there in his career.

Considering how much value they seem to place on his versatility, this seems to be a knock against that value. A guy who is supposed to be able to play all these positions should be able to play short. It's not hard to find backup OF. They have plenty of 2B depth. So really his only "value" is his ability to backup 3B, but any middle infield utility player should be able to do the same job, and the Cubs have a couple minor leaguers that can handle that backup duty.

Equally sad is Baker's insistence that Hairston is a OF when he is probably one of the better IF's defensively

Has anyone actually seen Todd Walker's splits against Lefties? Because he is doing MUCH MUCH better against Lefties...

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/splits?playerId=3539

.287/.341/.422/.763 against righties in 237 AB

.357/.392/.629/1.020 against lefties in 70 AB

That's only because Dusty put him in positions where he could succeed against lefties.

And he couldn't put Murton in positions to succeed against righties?

Also of note, even his typically bad numbers against LHP from previous years are better than Neifi's over that same time.

He is? I guess I haven't seen that.

He's been an OF this year because that's where our biggest need for him has been, not second base.

I don't understand where you're going with that or why you're complaining that he's been used in our awful outfield.

Before he was moved to OF everyone was wondering if he could play OF because he was out of place. Now it seems like that's the only spot Dusty will play him...

Exactly. Perez has moved above Hairston on the depth chart at 2B, even though Hairston is a natural 2B

I do think one of Dustys weakness's is a lack of creativity in offensive lineups . I dont think he is a raving boog in this area , as he is more dogmatic in his perception of the importance of continuity in defense and developing roles. That being said we are offensively challenged and getting more so with injuries. How this plays out in his lineups will be interesting to follow and provide some thought provocation for sure. God Bless and give us some cool temps in central cal.

Which is why it's mind boggling to me that he's replacing one of his best offensive assets with one of the worst. (Neifi for Walker)

What do you expect? He has to do something to cancel out the positive of Cedeno being in the line-up. Heck, we're lucky Macias isn't in center.

Don't be too hasty about that. FOr all you know, Dusty has already written Macias name in the lineup card...

Is Baker TRYING to hurt as many people as possible? Why not have Prior catch and put Zambrano in center?

I'm guessing Baker is thinking that playing 3B puts less strain on Nomar than playing SS. Plus this has the added effect of allowing Neifi to play SS while keeping Cedeno's butt firmly nailed to the bench.

Why do the Cubs keep calling up Cedeno if he is going to ride the pine? :?

I lived in Baltimore until about two years ago, and I gotta say Jerry Hairston is a fantastic second baseman. If he was a better hitter he would probably have been in the running for a gold glove or two while at Baltimore.

(That last line is a nock on the Baseball Writer's of America, I do know what a gold glove is, I also know its given out at random).

I would actually like to see Hairston at second full-time next year, but as I understand it Walker is almost a shoe-in at that spot. I don't see Hairston as a much worse offensive player then Walker (when you factor in speed, which is useless because the Cubs don't steal bases) and he's world's better on defense.

But back to the original topic: Nomar at third.

I wouldn't fear for the safety of fans on the first base side because of Nomar's wild throws. After all, the ball loses signifigant momentum each time it bounces.

That made me laugh out loud. :D

regardless of other issues, I want to commend Nomar for trying 3B.

Fair point. At least he wants to play and is willing to adapt to do it.

And another bizarre Cubs season, just got more bizarre....

I really don't think there's anything odd about this at all. I mean, other than Dusty's fascination with getting Neifi into the lineup whenever possible, it seems to makes sense to me.

I agree, it's the same business decision that was made when they put Wood in the pen. They are paying these guys WAY too much to just sit on the bench. If the guy can play, he should be in there. And I prefer to keep Neifi in the game...

Really?

Yes. For the time being, it makes sense to ride the wave.....
