bottom of the article...

Ryan Klesko stands to be the highest-paid Padre next year at $10.5 million. Giles is making $7 million this season. And teams such as the Cardinals, who tried to trade for Giles last night, might be in the bidding.

Now I would jump at the chance to add him, but how in the hell has he fell to us in the waiver line? Only owed prob. 1.2 to 1.5 mill for the rest of the season. Why didn't the cubs claim him or astros...etc.

Any way I find it hard to believe a 1st place team would trade him! Maybe the editor got this out late/wrong and meant they would be bidding on him in the offseason

Why would the Cubs claim him? They are out of the race and he's a FA at the end of the season.

They still have a poor outfield. If they want him, getting him and offering arbitration could be a good way to get something if they don't sign him on the open market.

Yeah but the Pads would want at least one good prospect for him and it would make no sense for the cubs to give up a prospect for him just for a rental when they are out of the race.

They don't have to try and trade for him, just see if SD is dumb enough to let him go.

San Diego is in first place there is no way they would let Giles just walk without getting something back in return. No GM is that dumb, the fans would be mad if they traded him but if they just let him go they should burn down the stadium because that would be the worst move in the history of baseball.

Okay, so then nothing comes of it. Nothing hurt on the Cubs end.

Oh i agree it wouldnt hurt for the cubs to put a waiver request in to at least block a trade to other teams and if by some reason the pads were dumb enough to just let him walk it would be good for the cubs.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Giles in a Cards uniform next season. We are looking at needing at least one outfielder, possibly two. He's a little old at this point so I wouldn't want them to give him anything longer than three years. Moving into the new stadium and all, and after the record attendance this season the team should have some more money to throw around, or might at least be looking to make a splash moving into the new stadium.

Which leads me to Johnny Damon anyone? Boras client I know but supposedly the Cards have a good relationship with Boras because of Ankiel. Stick Damon in right in 2006 and move him to center when Edmonds' contract expires. Unlikely I know, but it could happen.

To block him from St. Louis for next year.

Damon will be $$$. He's a Boras client and there is no doubt going to be a Yankees-Red Sox bidding war for his services, as the Yankees declined the option on Bernie Williams
