Here is a quote by Walker after the game:

"I don't think you start off selling people, because then you're quitting right now, you're giving up right now," Walker said. "Now is not the time."

All I can say is...WOW. You're done, Todd. Might as well get something of value and write this season off. At best your a longshot to jump atleast 5 teams and make up 7 games in the standings to reach the playoffs. The season is done.

Walker will hopefully be back at 2B next year, as he's got a relatively cheap team option.

But there's no problem in trading players who will be free agents this offseason and netting some prospects in return.

Agreed. As I noted in the Burnitz thread, though, what will we really get for some of these guys?

And congrats on your thousandth post.

Do you really expect him to come out and say, "yeah, this season is over. We don't have a chance. Let's pack it in and wait till next year." I don't think that would go over very well.

He may have an affordable option, but he may not fit into Hendry's strategy for 2006. I think his option should be picked up , and then he should be dealt in the offseason. Hendry may view it as he can get more for him now, so he may deal him before September 1.

We don't really have any in house options for 2B that could step in right away and produce on a level that Baker/Hendry would be comfortable with, unless they want to start Hairston. I can't see Hendry dealing Walker unless there is an obvious fill in.

And you hit the nail on the head. Having Hairston around does give Hendry the ability to deal Walker. Is Hairston better than Walker? Of course not. Is Hairston servicable at 2B? Yes, he is. Could Walker net us something in a trade? I believe so. I think the net-net could be positive. At the very least, it should be explored. I do believe that Hendry will try hard to get Soriano in the offseason, or if he signs Furcal, could even convince Nomar to play 2B, despite the reports today that Nomar wouldn't sign a 3/4 year $27M deal with San Diego last offseason because they wanted him to play 2B.

I don't get the impression that Hairston is a favorite of Hendry/Baker, though. Also, Hendry aquiring Soriano in the offseason could be dicey, since player aquisition costs always are higher in the offseason.

Also, if Nomar did make a move to 2B, if almost guarantees that Perez is resigned to back up SS/2B, and it also leaves Cedeno out in the lurch. I doubt very much that Hendry and Baker would go with a rookie backup to those poisitions.

Unfortunately, Soriano's outstanding .317 OBP would look great to Hendry.

Let me ask you this Willis, if Walker had said, ""yeah, this season is over. We don't have a chance. Let's pack it in and wait till next year," would you agree with him?

As fans, we can admit that the season is over. The players however have to keep playing and I want them to believe they still have a chance. At the very least they must tell reporters they still have a chance even if they don't actually believe it.

As for trading Walker, unless they get somebody really good it would be a mistake. What Walker provides offensively at the price for which he provides it the Cubs would be foolish to trade him now unless someone knocks their socks off- not easy to do in a post deadline deal.

Who needs a second baseman that has something the Cubs want?

Minnesota has Johan. :D

Seriously though, Minnesota needs a 2B, maybe we could take advantage of their overcrowded OF and pen.

I thought that Minny was talking to Texas about Soriano?

The 48-hour window passed and Texas pulled Soriano back from waivers.

Soriano ain't going to Minny, plain and simple.

As for Walker, I would love to trade Walker/prospect prospect for JC Romero, BUT I don't see Minny doing that trade.

I see. I wonder if the Twins would like Hairston? I would rather keep Walker.

I really don't see any more cost-effective options for 2B next year than Walker.

I'll pass on Soriano, thanks. Walker gives us average (at worst) production for the position, and with the money we save on him we can give to someone else.

I'm just fine with Todd Walker as the starting 2Bman in 2006.

Let it be known, I will be very angry if Walker is traded. They have the chance to bring him back at a reduced rate per production. If Lawton and Burnitz aren't traded, I hope it is based on getting not enough in return.
