If he can stay healthy the rest of the season and hit pretty well which I believe he will, bring him back for another year and see how he does.

Any thoughts on that one?

Yea. If healthy, I see a .300+ Nomar with 20+ HRs.

If Cubs want someone younger, then its time for Ronny Cedeno to make a solid start in his career.

I favor a return of Nomar, under a reduced make-good deal (like the current one, just with a much lower base) with Cedeno backing up 2B/SS. Cedeno could probably get a goot 20-30 starts plus PH and defensive substitution time, and we could get a better picture of what his capabilities are. If he can become a solid major league regular, we'll have a better assessment then. If he looks to be a career utility man, well, we'll have us a cheap utility man, and we won't have depended on him for everyday play.

Sign Nomar to a incentive deal, Ronny is the back-up.

Best Case scenario - We get a great .300 + hitter.

Worst Case scenario - Nomar gets hurt, Ronny Cedeno is our SS

I think right now it would be foolish to hand it to Ronny. I DEFINATELY do not want Hendry to say Cedeno is his SS and sign Neifi as back up. Because I fear we've seen that play out already COUGHdubois/hollandsworthCOUGH. I'm afraid Hendry cannot trust Dusty with a rookie position player and a vet back-up.

I would really like to see Nomar given a shot in LF next year. His numbers are at least average for a corner OF. Plus with a few more needs on this team with such a weak FA class it would be an easy fix. If Nomar goes down we have Murton waiting. Plus we can give Cedeno a shot as well.

All depends on the base price he is asking, if he asking for 5mil base and 3 mil in incentives, I'd bring him back. But, if it is a repeat of his '05 salary, I'd rather see them try and trade for Lugo.

I agree totally. You cant lose either way, assuming you lose Neifi and have Cedeno as the backup.

Cedeno and Branyan as the main INF backups would be pretty good, IMO.

I'm not a fan of having 30+ year old guys move to a position they never played before (unless it's something really easy to play like 1B). Remember Walker's adventure in left last year, and Todd Hundley's adventure when he was with the Dodgers? LF can be very difficult to play for an infielder.

Keep him at SS.

Have you been watching him play the last couple weeks? He is much lighter(hm-m-m-m) than he was in April. His fielding skills have diminished and is a shell of his former self.

Now is the time to let the farm system kick in and let Ronnie Cedeno start.

Nomar's been hitting .393 since he returned. That's not exactly a shell of his former self.

Not really. He looks the same as he did before.

haven't seen this mentioned, but what about moving nomar to 2B and letting cedeno take over at SS? cedeno is better defensively and has more range. moving nomar to 2B might take some pressure off the groin area which i've got to think is going to be a lingering ailment to some extent over the next few years.

just a thought...

I don't think there's any guarantee that Nomar will be more productive than Walker at 2B, and we have Walker on the cheap next year. I like Nomar(with a little Cedeno) + Walker better than Cedeno + Nomar.

I'd rather see Walker and Nomar than Nomar and Cedeno. Walker is cheap enough and hits well enough to off-set any defensive shortcomings.

If they wanted to save money, I'd rather see them keep Walker over Nomar and start Ronny at SS.

I'd like to see Nomar back at short and Walker back at second, too. Why would we want to see Nomar in left? We would be taking above average production from a SS and turning it into below average production for a corner outfielder. We can find a corner outfielder in the off season. I don't think we can find a SS with the potential to put up numbers like Nomar. Cendeno is nice insurrance against injury.

I think we should spend the money and get furcal, resign nefi and see if Cedano can unseat him at second base. Leadoff hitter, swtich hitter, steals bases, plays short.... 3 years 30 mil....

Nomar might not be done but he seems to be breaking down....Older players often seem to get nagging injuries that keep them out longer...

The cubs should stop trying to get stop gaps and go after players that can be cornerstones for several years....

The same goes for corner outfield positions....try and get a Vernon Wells type outfielder in a semi salary dump and leave the other remaining for rookies like Murton/Pie/Sing...A guy like Giles would have been great 5 years ago but if you sign him to 3 years or more we will be in trouble..

Check your tv. He's 10 pounds lighter than April. Numerous media people in Chicago have noticed the same thing.

It's .343...with 1 HR and 1 RBI. Pretty expensive to pay $8 million+ for a singles hitter with a fading glove.

Considering we were paying AGon 6mil it's not that bad.

Wow, all of a sudden Nomar is a roid user? Come on, let's be serious now. Nomar was never ripped and accusing him of using roids isnt fair.

I don't believe Nomar has used steroids either, but the speculation is out there.

Gammons Article

EDIT: ^-- Granted, one of the points of the article is that Peter believes Nomar is clean - I'm just pointing out that some have thrown his name out there.

You can speculate for all players then.

He's a singles hitter based on his first 20-something at bats back?
