That is just terrible.

He has done this like three years in a row now.

Will the D-rays really take a chance putting him in the ML lineup with those awful numbers? Lugo is having a good year...I am sure they won't be rushing him up any time soon.

With the way he has hit in the minors combined with the hype surrounding him I don't see any way he is not in their starting lineup next year. You can probably also pencil in Delmon Young. However, they will probably try to put Upton at third because Piniella is an old school guy that insists on good defense up the middle.

C - Hall

SS - Lugo

1B - Huff

2B - Cantu

3B - Upton

LF - Crawford

CF - Baldelli

RF - Young

DF - Gomes

Probably not enough pitching to compete for the playoffs, but with that lineup teams are not going to be looking forward to playing them quite so much.

Derek Jeter had over 60 errors in the minors one year. The truly amazing thing is that this kid and Cantu aren;t the DRAYS middle infield.

Now, by no means am I saying that Cedeno is going to have as good of a career as B.J. Upton, but...

This is Cedeno's first year at AAA. This is Upton's 2nd (he played 69 games at Durham last season). Cedeno is hitting .366/.414/.546 this season. Upton's numbers are .304/.390/.498. Cedeno has 9 errors in 58 games. Upton has 46 in 121.

Of course, Cedeno is a year and a half older than Upton, and Upton's numbers have been more consistent throughout his career (Cedeno has only put up good offensive numbers the last two seasons). And we all know Upton's "tools" are remarkable while Cedeno's pale in comparison as do most minor leaguers. But it does make you feel a little better about Cedeno's future when you compare his numbers this year to B.J.'s.

Question: Is Cedeno's 58+ games at AAA this season enough to know what he is capable of? Should he play more in Iowa next season?

Defensively, Cedeno mops the floor with Upton. I don't care if he can make the amazing highlight real plays once in a while. Cedeno can make some pretty spiffy plays himself, and he does a heckuva lot better with the routine and easy ones.

Offensively, however, I don't think anyone in their right mind would pick Ronny over BJ. BJ was a top pick for a reason, he's a legit offensive force for the middle of any lineup, who can steal lots of bases as well.

If Ronny can maintain a .300/.350/.480 and play spectacular defense (this line would be a big step down from his current one) then I see no reason why he can't be an everyday player, and a very good one at that.

can we put money on whether this will ever happen?

guess how many shortstops in the national league have an .830 ops.

zero.

guess how many al shortstops have an .830 ops.

4. but one of them is jhonyy peralta, he of the crazy high babip. but he's still got it, so he counts. derek jeter, btw, is at exactly .831. jeter's career ops is .848, but jeter plays bad defense. so if cedeno becomes an .830 ops ss and plays spectacular defense, he's a fair shake better than derek jeter.

i think this is unlikely to ever be the case.

Those numbers sound a lot like the numbers people were pencilling in for Bobby Hill before 2003. I like Ronnie, but it wouldn't be pessimistic to expect anything more than .260/.300/.380.

I think a .680 OPS as a ceiling is a little pessimistic. I agree with Tree's reasoning, but I think Cedeno could/would hit .270-.275/.320-.325/.390-.400 if he played full time.

I know it was a huge stretch.

Even if he maintains his line from AA in '04, he could still be a solid 7-8 hitting SS with good D.

I'd be more than happy with .280/.330/.405, which is a point or two better in each category than his actual '04 line, and he's shown improvement since then also.

.735 OPS wouldn't be great, but if he plays defense as he is capable of, and isn't counted on as an integral part of this offense, it's definately doable.
