Here's a possibility: Rich Hill as trade bait in the off-season. Hill's name has been tossed around on numerous occasions. He's looked great in AAA, good at times with the Cubs. Why hurt his trade value by allowing him to get shelled a time or two?

I think the Cubs feel like they know who they have in Rich Hill. Another 4-5 starts in September isn't going to change their projection. But it might change the minds of trade partners if he doesn't pitch well.

Why not boost his trade value by allowing him to throw a great start or two, by that same logic? Prospects don't lose or gain value that easily. They don't have all that much value to begin with. IF a team likes a player, they will most likely know more than just the numbers. They like a pitcher because of his talent. If Hill gets shelled, his talent doesn't lessen. Conversely, if he throws 2 no-hitters, his talent doesn't grow.

You said it yourself. If the Cubs know who they have in Rich Hill, best believe most other teams do too.

I do think prospects lose value a lot faster than they gain it. A lot faster. And while Hill might not have a whole lot of value right now, a little is better than none at all.

As you know, you can have all the talent in the world, but that doesn't necessarily translate into success at the major league level.

And I tend to believe other teams don't know the value of Hill as well as the Cubs do. But if you still want to believe other teams know Hill as good as the Cubs, you won't get an argument from me.

remember when hendry said hill may get a start before the season was up? well, despite the fact that maddux is unable to extend his stupid 'record' and that the cubs fell completely out of it early in september, it looks like that 'may' has turned into a 'you gotta be kidding me'.

good news is, we got a bunch more meaningless starts from rusch, and we get to watch with bated breath as maddux tries to finish at .500 (tickets still available for this historic day!).

i'm glad a month of completely pointless baseball has allowed us to learn nothing more about hill's abilities at the big league level.

"And let clubs get a book on him!? I'll stick with Rusch, he's gotten us to this point."

Rusch tomorrow, Maddux Sunday. If Dusty and the front office hadn't already made me not care about the team, I'd be pissed.

First time since early '98 that I haven't been following each and every game. I'm down to about one game every two weeks now.
