I just heard on ESPN sports radio that Remlinger is likely headed to the Red Sox for a minor league pitcher? Can anyone confirm and who is the pitcher?

Boston station WEEI announced on my way into work that Remlinger is coming to them for a minor leaguer.

I hadn't heard this anywhere, but the guys on the station were talking about the fact that Remlinger is a bit of "an attitude" case - I had to get in to work so I didn't hear anymore.

Any bets on Tito using Remmy properly and Remmy being great for them? I think it's a very good possibility.

Are you trying to say that Baker didn't use him properly? All of us in Cub nation know that Remmy is a LOOGY.

Hey, don't knock it, I'm shocked we're getting ANYTHING for him. Must be that the Red Sox don't think they can wait 10 or however many days to just sign him.

Anything we get back is a plus. Of course, Remmy will go on a hellacious tear and help pitch the Red Sox to another World Series, but hey, that's life...

And I betcha he doesn't face nary a left handed batter...

I'm sure the Cubs will get a quality minor league pitcher in return. :^o

They got a pretty good return for Jimmy Anderson from the Red Sox....

Hehe, indeed. They got Andrew Shipman and a PTBNL that ended up being, er, Jimmy Anderson!

Shipman has 54 IP, 47 H, 0 HR, 26 BB, 56 K, 3.00 ERA line at Double-A this year. He's 23, but his stuff seems to be thought by scouts to be pretty average.

Still, 0 HRs and a K an inning.

I hope Remlinger DOES get a world series with the Red Sox. Any Cubs player that's had to to deal with Dusty deserves to be traded to whoever wins the world series this year...

Hendry sure has thrown cash around this year to get players to play elsewhere. $16m to Baltimore. About $2M to San Fran. A couple million to Alou. Now, some pocket change to Boston...

That might be close to Tampa Bay's payroll.

It's not his money. Why not pay people to take your problems away for you?

Yeah, really, it's a freebie prospect who will likely never pan out to anything but, you never know, could put something together out of the blue in a couple years and be worth something.

Astacio is a non-prospect, but it's a case of getting something where we were getting nothing. The cash is insignificant. Had Remlinger not been traded, the Cubs would have been paying him anyway.

It indeed is significant looking at the big picture. Hendry overpaid for Remlinger. He went after the oldest guy in the lefty set-up man pool and thought he was setting the market. In fact, the lefties to sign later that offseason, e.g. Chris Hammond, Mike Stanton, to name a couple, never signed contracts as wealthy as that signed by Remlinger. The bloated contract he signed him to forces him to pay someone to take him if he wants anything in return (such as a mediocre minor leaguer).

It was a bad contract from start to finish.

EDIT: Chris Hammond is two months older than Remlinger.

No Anibal Sanchez? :(

J/K - I wish Remmy success with an organization that figures to utilize him more efficiently.

Ditto. Good luck in Boston Remmy.

It wasn't necessarily that bad of a contract if you considered all factors. First, we were at a time when no one had faith that the company was going to try to field a winning team, so we had to pay a premium to get people to come here. He wasn't THAT old when we signed him, it's not like we offered a multiyear deal to a 39 or 40 year old. Remmy had an ERA in the low to mid 2.00s combined over the last few years before we signed him, and was one of the elite relievers in the league. However, Dusty never did figure out how to use him properly, and he was plagued by injuries. Sometimes when you sign people, things don't work out. It's easy to criticize moves after the fact, but considering all of the facts that were available at the time, it wasn't a bad move by Hendry to sign him to the contract that he did.

On a side note...Hendry has gone after and paid well for two guys who were elite setup men to bolster his bullpen since he has been GM...Remmy and Hawkins. Does anyone else think that those two guys busts have made Hendry hesitant to pay big money for a premium reliever, and that's why he's trying to get someone from within the organization to step up?

I think that theres a difference in price between a setup man and a closer. It's possible Hendry doesnt want to fork out the extra cash for a closer.

Did Remmy clear waivers, or did the BoSox put a claim in for him? By your last sentence I assume he cleared.
