Assuming we do end up looking for a new manager this offseason, what is everyone's thoughts on Davey Johnson?

Looking at his managerial record, he definitely has some pedigree. Has anyone here followed him closely enough to know his style or predilictions?

Looking here, it appears that in his 14 seasons as a manager, he only finished below .500 three times.

His career winning percentage is 564.

He's not at the top of my list, but he's a curious option.

Speaking of managerial possibilities, why hasn't this guy gotten another chance to manage a team.

He has 518 winning percentage to go with two World Series rings.

Didn't he get in trouble for something he said? I thought I remember him being fired for something other than performance.

I don't think so. Multiple sources I found via google mention him being fired for being in last and how it is curious that he hasn't gotten another job.

Same here. I ran multiple searches and didn't find anything about any comments, just a bunch of comments asking why he hadn't been hired by anyone.

No, that was the manager that succeeded him. Tim Johnson, succeeded Gatson and was fired because he lied about being a Vietnam veteran.

Johnson, in his first year as a big-league skipper in 1998, motivated his Blue Jays by telling them stories about his days of combat as a marine in Vietnam.

Johnson first denied charges that he lied, but finally admitted it after it was discovered he'd never served in Vietnam (he was a reservist who did his six-year stint stateside). He also admitted that he'd never been an All-America basketball player in high school, as his official bio indicated.

Toronto fired the former Brewers and Jays infielder (.223 lifetime average) after it became clear he'd been telling tales for decades. "This has been something that's been bothering me for 28 years," Johnson said.

The Mexico City Devil Rays hired Johnson soon after he left the Jays. One agent asked, [Has he been] "telling his players he fought at the Alamo?"

GOOD WORK EXPERT

Davey had a very odd stop in LA. He got roasted beyond belief in LA and got sent out by Malone in the Fox fiasco. He really hasn't been on anyone's radar in the last couple of years.

Does anyone have any info on his style or preference for players? I know that he's managed a lot of winners, but I'll admit that I'm ignorant when it comes to his philosophies.

I do know that he ran a very loose, maybe too loose, clubhouse for the 86 Mets.

I'd be happy to have the groundhog on Caddyshack manage the Cubs as long as Baker isn't there anymore.

I tend to agree.

At this point it's pretty much "Anyone but Dusty"

How about the return of Don Baylor?

I'd still rather have the groundhog.

Dusty is Baylor 2.0, only more maddening.

Ok, not ANYONE but Dusty, but we need a manager with a different philosophy.

Davey Johnson was a favorite of Bill James. Believes in high OBP and didnt have a problem playing rookies. Its been a few years since he managed though. He was so successful that you would think that he might not be interested. If we are going to take on a out of the game for a while type manager I think Jim Leyland would also be a good choice.

What I want from a manager:

-Good strategist

-Knows how to use bench (I think it's important because of the day games)

-Can incorporate rookies and young players

-Can put players in where they can be successful

-Can communicate and discipline

-Not be afraid to except blame

-Can maximize a pitching staff

I know Johnson was coaching in the Northern League during the 2004 season. He was the coach for a buddy of mine.

If I'm not mistaken, Tim Johnson managed the Iowa Cubs before he was hired by the Blue Jays. He was obviously seen at the time as an up-and-coming managerial prospect.

Davey Johnson is a name that seems to come up every time there is a managerial opening. He's had a lot of success, but somehow has rubbed some people the wrong way. Since his last managerial stint with the Dodgers, I don't think he has ever seriously been considered for another job. I like what he brings to the table, but there is something there that gives me pause. I'd take him in a heartbeat over Baker though, and over most of the other familiar names that have been tossed around.

For a laugh, check out Davey Johnson's page on Baseball Reference.

I'm sure a high profile job like the Cubs would be enticing to Johnson. Someone make the case for Leyland for me, please.
