If you wanted to be a fighter, you should have chosen something besides TKD. Face it, some day someone is going to punch you in the face, and you're going to have no idea what to do.

If you only knew as much as you thought you did, well, we'd be in the presence of greatness.

Also, I realize that TKD is not as focused on the actual fighting aspect as some other styles. But, to say the moves are ineffective, is just plain stupid, and uninformed.

The fact is TaeKwonDo is a mix between Karate and a chinese martial art (which name escapes me). For a very long time Korea (where TKD is from) was basically the middle ground in the fight between Japan and China. It was controlled by both countries/empires countless times. Over the years, Koreans molded together some of the Japanese methods (karate) and parts of the chinese methods, and thus TKD was born. Lots of the fighting tactics/techniques you find in Karate, are also found in TKD. Only they have been slightly modified or just go by a different name.

And Xzero, I realize you are not trying to talk down TKD. And yes, obviously other styles are more tailored directly towards fighting. But tkd is not made of things that need to be tweaked to work in real life. Sparring, Ground fighting, Knife defense, PPCT, Joint locks. They are all very applicable and very effective. I was speaking on how the artistic side (forms) can be tweaked to be applicable, and effective.

I realize that if you want to learn strictly how to fight then there are other styles you should try your hand in because you will not waste your time doing anything other than fighting. So while you may only practice the actual "street fighting" moves that i mentioned around half the time on your way to black belt (once you reach black belt, they become much more present however), that does not mean the moves are ineffective. Some of those tactics i spoke of, PPCT and Joint locks, are the exact same ones taught to police officers and S.W.A.T. teams.

So, is tkd all focused on fighting? Of course not. Are the moves ineffective, hell no.

Just promise that if a fight ever erupts, and you want to jump in, that you won't go in doing your TKD, because someone will punch you, and you will have no idea what to do, and you will get your ass kicked.

Jesus Christ, IMB. You have absolutely no idea of my skill level, whatsoever. And until you do, just stop spewing out trash like that. You have no clue in the world what kind of fighter I am. It is incredibly insulting to me that I have been taking martial arts for ten years and you come out with this crap saying that if I ever got into a real fight I'd have no idea what to do.

And furthermore, how in the hell do you know whether or not I have been in a "real" fight before? You are assuming. And methinks you assume too much about something you know nothing about.

Go insult someone on something you actually have a clue about.

Maybe, just maybe, he is just trying to get your roasted goat. Your point is exactly right, he doesn't know your skill level. Thus, the likely conclusion is that he is teasing you. Don't get worked up over it.

If you were of age, I'd suggest a stiff drink. Always helps me after a long day of work or a long day of Cubs losing as has been the case for every day the past week.

Shoot, the best time for a stiff drink is when you are Roast's age. It just stops being fun after you turn 21.

At various times I've taken TKD, Jiujitsu, and Shorin-Ryu. They were all useful, but the focus on kicks and distance taught in TKD limited its brawling usefulness, in my opinion. Jiujitsu was very good, since it focused on locks, limb destruction and, well, general pain-infliction by whatever was the best response to your attack. Of all, I found SR to be the most useful. I think it was probably the teaching and the focus on practicality.

Tai chi kicks a**. Not your grammy's old-folks-home-watered-down-[expletive]-foot-around-the-power tai chi. Real, taught-in-the-monestaries, stop-someone's-heart, toss-them-across-the-room, make-them-cr*p-their-pants, make-them-fear-you, all-without-breaking-a-sweat tai-chi. Sword, staff, hand-to-hand, whatever. And you can practice it and use it until you grow old.

P.S. If anyone here is a practicioner of Kung-Fu, I'd like to discuss it. Kung-Fu is far less common then most others because it requires such an enormous commitment, if you are a serious student. I always wanted to take it, but finding a good school in the states is difficult.

Something I'm sure you know: Kung fu is a general term for chinese martial arts. There are many different forms/styles.

I took wing chun with a friend, and it was cool. I honestly can't say I know much about it, though. I do know that a friend of mine was very good at it and ended up going to a Martial arts academy in Boston in lieu of college. It was called YMAA (Yang's Martial Arts Academy), and it was very good, according to him. After stduying in it for a while, he went to the some world championship tournament but got disqualified for continually punching his opponent in the face. He and I don't talk much anymore.

Did those two events have anything to do with one another?

I was aware of that, and I was curious if anyone here a student of any of the Kung-Fu disciplines. They just seem to be far less commmon that the others that have been discussed in this thread, at least in the United States.

I once beat up a guy who did TKD. FWIW.
I have broken the nose of a guy in TKD, cracked the ribs of a guy in TKD, kocked out a guy who was in TKD, and nearly broke the jaw of a guy who was in TKD.

Of course, all of the above incidents happened in class. So I guess it doesnt count. :P

Yeah, and all those guys practiced TKD. Not a compelling argument that people who know TKD are good fighters.

Whoops, perhaps that was your point.

Never mind.
