The Cubs are investigating whether outfielder Marquis Grissom, who was designated for assignment recently by San Francisco, is healthy enough to be of help to them. But when Patterson is ready, whether the Cubs sign Grissom or not, Patterson will be the starting center fielder.

Looks like Hendry will try to pull his annual lightning in a bottle act.

Hey, it's one of the 4 non-catchers in the National League worse than Macias this year!

I can see it already, Grissom gets plugged into CF and plays nearly every day the rest of the way. He manages to hit around .270 and plays average defense. This offseason, he's signed to a one year contract to serve as a back up OF. He'll miraculously find his way into the starting lineup in '06 for no good reason.

2003 - Randall Simon

2004 - Neifi Perez

2005 - Marquis Grissom(?)

I want to say, "What the heck, let's give it a shot." Since the last two worked out well. But we have plenty of equally or greater talented young OFs who need More playing time, not Less. So no, it's not worth the chance in '05.

If Grissom produces even semi-decent results it is a metaphysical certainty that Baker will lobby to keep him for 2006. Baker said he actually asked Hendry to keep Simon and Karros for 2004, and of course we know he wanted Neifi, Holla, and Macias back for 2005.

Going by Runs Created, or more specifically RC/G, which is just like taking Hits and turning it into batting average. There are several ways to calculate Runs Created, THT(where I got the numbers from) isn't specific, but here's what they have to say:

Runs Created. Invented by Bill James, RC is a very good measure of the number of runs a batter truly contributed to his team’s offense. The basic formula for RC is OBP*TB, but it has evolved into over fourteen different versions. We use the most complicated version, which includes the impact of hitting well with runners in scoring position, and is adjusted for ballpark impact.

When you google Runs Created, this is the formula that they show: (H + BB + HBP - CS - GIDP)*(TB + .26(TBB - IBB + HBP) + .52(SH + SF + SB))/(AB + TBB + HBP + SH + SF)

I predicted this yesterday under "Hairston's Replacement (Dusty's Boys)". Just what we need another over-the-hill player. Does anybody really think we're a real contender when we look at every other team's rejects? Let Murton play LF, put Burnitz in CF, and Lawton in RF at least until September, so that you can start to make some decisions about next year (Is Murton a starting OF?, Should we resign Burnitz and Lawton?, etc.). It's bad enough that we're not going to get to the playoffs this year, but Hendry won't have any idea about the OF next year and whether Cedeno can be counted on to be the starting SS in 2006 or 2007.

I still can't understand why we just don't shift Burnitz to CF, Lawton to RF, and Murton to LF.

Murton is hitting over 400 and he gets one start per week. That is inexcusable. We faced a lefty in Glavine and Murton gets one measly pinch hit appearance.

The longer this goes on, the louder my cries for a Dusty removeable will get.

Sadly the louder they get, I'm afraid the ears (in Cubs management) still don't care.

That may be true, but sometimes a disgruntled fan base can make some noise.

Hopefully, Dusty will be booed at this year's Cubs Convention.

Never. I despise Dusty Baker with just about every bone in my body, but I'm not one to sell out my team.

Not selling out, but I need a team to 'adopt' in the AL anyway. I'd root Cubs against A's any day.
