I'd love it if Dusty were to make an OF like this:

Murton LF

Lawton CF

Burnitz RF

or

Murton LF

Burnitz CF

Lawton RF

But I have no doubt in my mind that Dustbag is going to do something like this:

Lawton LF

Hairston CF

Burnitz RF

We can only hope Dusty has enough sense (Ha! I used "Dusty" and "sense in the same sentence) to use one of the first 2 alignments.

That third option would be a bad one. An outfield with both Lawton and Hairston would provide an unnecessary duplicative bat and give us two less than average defensive outfielders.

I'm not sure that Lawton has the speed/range to play CF or the arm to play RF...

Who gives a crap if he haves a good arm? It's not like the Cubs have thrown out many baserunners at home.......

What do you mean by an unnecessary duplicative bat? To me it seems like they are both speedy guys with fairly good OBP. I thought that was what the Cubs needed more of to go with the power bats of ARam, Burnitz, Lee and Walker?

Lawton has good speed. He generally gets about 25 SBs or more when he plays a full year.

Yup, he has 16 steals so he should be able to play CF.

Im going to like Lawton playing with the Cubs if they can sign him for next year too. Lets go win the WC.

I'd go:

Todd

Lawton

Burnitz

Knowing Dusty at times it might be this:

Perez

Blanco

Lee

Lawton has more power than Hairston and I agree that they're not "duplicate bats", by any means, especially since 1 is right handed and the other is Left Handed, as well.

I was over at a Pirates board, and they had heard that the Cubs might use him in center. The most common terms used to describe that idea were "comical" "amusing" and just plain old bad. Having speed doesn't make you a good CF candidate. Other GM's have been questioning his defensive ability as a corner OF, so that should tell us something. Lawton needs to be in LF.

Your freaking crazy. Hollandsworth? With his robust .250 AVG? I'd take Murton and his OBP thank you very much.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet but, now that we have a true leadoff hitter in Lawton. Why not bring Patterson back up and bat him 7th behind hopefully Nomar when he returns. Patterson plays a better center and he could add a little more power to the bottom of the order.

The only way I want Patterson in Wrigley is if he's playing on another team. Of course Hendry thinks he's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I think I'd go with Lawton (LF) Hairston (CF) and Burnitz (RF). Move Hairston down to the 8th spot.

I wouldn't be totally opposed to going Murton (LF) Burnitz (CF) and Lawton (RF), but I think the defense might suffer a great deal.

He's been struggling (from being sick, it looks like) since being sent back down to the minors.

The same kind of duplicative bat that Lofton and Grudzielanek were?

I like Walker in a run-producing spot Lawton NOT in center which means Murton to AAA until September

Hey guys. First time posting, but I've been reading here for a while.

I like an outfield right now of Lawton LF, Hairston CF, and Burnitz RF. We could bat Lawton and Hairston 1,2 and move Walker down into a run producing spot. This is what I like if Lawton's defense really is as bad as is being said.

My second choice would be Murton LF, Burnitz CF, and Lawton RF just to keep Murton in the lineup.

Lofton and Grudzy were complimentary (1 & 2 hitters, Grudzy was not a leadoff hitter even though he batted 1st in the lineup often by default). Lawton and Hairston are both leadoff hitters. Hairston is just not a really good leadoff hitter; nonetheless, he certainly is not a 2 hitter.

I can see putting Hairston in the 8 spot since he can be a little patient and take some walks before the pitcher is up, then assuming the inning doesn't end on the pitcher's at bat, Lawton can have an opportunity to knock in Hairston.

I'm still concerned about the defense with those 2 out there. However, I'm lessoning my position on those 2 being duplicative as long as Hairston bats in the 8 spot and not as the 1st or 2nd batter in the lineup.
