I'd like to see this lineup, when Nomar returns:

CF - Lawton

2B - Walker

1B - Lee

3B - Ramirez

RF - Burnitz

SS - Nomar

C - Barrett

LF - Murton

I agree with that except I would prefer Lawton in LF and replace Murton with Hairston as the CF batting 8th.

Murton can get some spot starts filling in for Lawton and Burnitz. The way he looked with bases loaded the other day scared me a little. They threw him three straight breaking pitches and he was not close to any of them. I think he has been fortunate with some scratch hits so far and needs a little more seasoning before I would put him in LF every day.

If the Cubs fall hopelessly out of the race by September then give him an extended look.

For those that want to bring up CPatt to play CF, I agree that he is still in the Cubs plans but not until he gets straighten out in AAA and I haven't seen any evidence of that happening yet. As Hendry has said many times now, its going to take some time.

I gotta agree, he's struggling in Iowa and hasn't shown signs of improvement since being sent there. There's no reason to bring him up right now.

referencing the earlier posts regarding Lawton and his contract situation, If Henry decides to offer arbitration or resigns him, isn't there such a rule that there is a maxium percentage paycut he can take?

He can be resigned for any amount (hi or low). I think arbitration does not have limits; but, the parties must come up with a number. Not surprisingly, the teams generally come up with lower numbers than the player and the arbitrator sides somewhere in between. In effect, the team sets the minimum with their offer in arbitration. Most teams try not to ridiculously low ball a player becase it may create for an unhappy player in the clubhouse.

Sorry, I havent read this whole thread, but the Pirates are giving one million to the Cubs. So this was a player for player trade with even money? WHy would the Pirates do this trade?

Gerut's only making 356,000 this year, so even with the million the pirates save a little in the short term.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that the arbiter could pick the players number or the teams number, and nothing in-between. There could be certain situations I'm not aware of, however.

That's true, but in the team selecting a number, they have a minimum that they have to offer. I believe the lowest is 15% below the previous year's salary, but don't hold me to that.

I don't know if anybody noticed this particular detail of the trade, but

The Cubs will also receive a little more than $1 million to offset the remainder of Lawton's $7.25 million salary.

Via the Tribune.

What a steal!

Oh, and this is sure to anger everyone, check out this soundbit from SI.com:

His on-base percentage of .382 was especially appealing to the Cubs. Manager Dusty Baker said he didn't know until talking with Lawton if he would bat leadoff, but was glad to have his bat.

Uh....Dusty? What the #@$ else are you going to do with him?

I'm hoping Dusty wants to lead him off and is just making sure that's where Lawton wants to be.

My fear is that he wants to bat him 5th or something, to completely ruin the value of his impressive OBP.

I don't see how he can't figure out that the best place to put him is leadoff.

they're going to have a footrace tomorrow to determine who gets to bat leadoff. everyone knows the fastest guy on the team bats leadoff. also, if you're small it helps too.

Or the first person to ask him.

re: Lawton's splits. do these 2001 splits make any sense?

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlbpa/players/5511/splits?year=2001&type=Batting

unless he reached in like 23 of 25 times at bat right before the ASB then did nothing the rest of July, how does he post a .324 second half OBP when by month he went .373, .358, .379?

Wow, that is bizarre. His 1 for 12 October helps explain it, and I get a .337 OBP when I calculated it from July through October. So I guess it's not THAT farfetched that his July was close to what you suggest to bring down his OBP to the .320s.

I'm actually glad that the Soriano and Dunn deals didn't go through. The last thing the Cubs need is a player that swings for the fences. Lawton gets on base and will be a spark for this offense.

There's no reason this offense can't start scoring runs. NOW.

LF Lawton

2B Walker

SS Garciaparra

1B Lee

3B Ramirez

RF Burnitz

CF Hairston

C Barrett

Baker has everything he needs on offense to make this team a winner. If the Cubs fail to make the playoffs now, it's on him.
