Is it just me, or does anyone else have the feeling that when early September rolls around, Houston might just pass St. Louis for the division lead and title?

That would set up a potential Cubs-Cards battle for the Wild Card. How about that for the ultimate in irony?

Have a great weekend.

If Houston catches St. Louis for the division then the Cubs are hosed. I don't care how banged up the Cards are, the Cubs are not even close to being 11.5 games better than the Cards the rest of the way in. The biggest hope for the Cubs is that all those Astros pitchers who are pitching over their heads (Clemens, Wheeler, Pettitte, Oswalt) come down to earth.

Cards are a bit mediocre right now since they have been hit with a multitude of injuries to key players (similar to what the Cubs have experienced the past 2 years). They will most likely start to play better again once those players return. I don't see Houston maintaining their current hot streak right now. They will eventually slow down and fall short of the Cards.

i just left st lou yesterday and for a week a had to listen to cards talk radio. i can tell you that the fans and the media are gripping! they are down on this team and want a move made worse than any of us on here! it was hilarious to think a team has a double digit lead and they(the fans) are ready to sell the farm to get help! the loss of the cubs series really got to them.

Yeah, those guys are scrubs.

oswalt and clemens have not been pitching over their heads at all, they're capable of being the best pitchers in the NL. pettitte however, i have my doubts about.

I must have missed the part where Clemens' career ERA was 1.46, Pettitte's was 2.72 and Oswalt's was 2.33... I guess I "incorrectly" thought that their career ERAs much higher than that.

Oh by the way, enjoy that $17.5M millstone of a contract that Pettitte has in 2006

We'll worry about next year in 2006. Right now, the Astros are beginning to pull away from the Cubs too. 4 up. This is just like the Cards did to us in May. Somehow, someway, our boys need to right ship. We've lost 2 of 3 to Arizona, while the Astros have blanked the Mets.

I remember last season when people were saying the Cards were playing over their heads, and it was a fluke season that they could never repeat.

Well I've said since the beginning of the year that there are too many fundamental problems with this club for me to envision it making the playoffs... so I'm already looking forward to next season. Hopefully Hendry will address the OBP, bullpen and injury issues in the offseason.

Pettitte is pitching over his head, no if's, and's or but's about it. If you think that the pitcher who has given up 1 or less runs 8 consecutive times is anything close to the real Andy, you are sadly mistaken.

Clemens is playing over his head, but to a far lesser degree than Pettitte is.

Punky Oswalt is pitching to his ability, IMO.

They were, and the Cards aren't going to sniff 105 wins this year. The problem is that the Cubs haven't played any better than they did last season.

Well right now they're on pace for 103, and they've never really gotten hot like they did for about 3 months last year.

Do You Think Houston Will Catch St. Louis?

I doubt it. Cubs are cooked if that happens. What I *hope* is that we play well the rest of the way and beat Houston in the head to head games and then it should take care of itself.

But I dont particularly care. Right now we just need to play, and win. Now, ask me again in a month and I might have a different answer.

Considering that we play 10 games against the astros, unless the astros run the table against everyone else they wont be able to make up 9.5 games without most likely knocking us out in the process. Unless of course we help them out by going 11-0 against the cards.

Yes, it can happen.

If Carpenter and Pujols go down with injuries the Stros could catch them.

If Rolen, Sanders and Molina come back and there are no further injuries, there is no way the Cards don't win the Central.

I also think that they still have a deal to make during waiver trades.

As stated in previous posts, the Cubs need to hope that the Astros fade. And start fading soon.

Yeah, it needs to stop soon. Andy Pettitte with 8 consecutive starts allowing 1 run or less, Wandy Rodriguez and Astacio beating Martinez and Benson...this madness can't continue for much longer.

Houston did this same thing last year but they didn't start until August.

I hate the Cards but I can't respect the Astros with their stupid ballpark and absurd left field layout.

Besides: the Astros have been red hot and are still almost 10 games back from the Cards. Even though the Cards went out west with their AAA lineup and went 4-2. Jerks.

From stltoday.com:

The Cardinals have fallen behind last season's 105-win pace but still carry the league's best record, 66-38. They entered the month with an 8 1/2-game lead and exit 9 1/2 games ahead. For all of July's injury-related angst, they compiled the best winning percentage of any month this season.

*sigh*

Not going to happen. Even with the injuries that St. Louis has there is no way that Houston catches them.
