Will Carroll[/url]"]Friday, July 29, 12:40 a.m. ET: The Alfonso Soriano rumors took a new turn as Bruce Levine of ESPN 1000 in Chicago says that a deal bringing Soriano to the Cubs is close. Levine also said that the Cubs would move Soriano to left field. Sources on both sides of this deal deny any discussions.

If this is true and if soriano is actually willing to move to LF this is a great move. I realize the past two years he has been horrible on the road but the 3 years before that he was awesome on the road and actually better on the road than at home. Hmm...well have to wait and see

lets speculate on who we'd be sending back...

Mitre/Welley + Holly/Patterson for Soriano

I imagine they'd rather take Patterson than Holly and thats fine with me...

hopefully not too much more than that as Soriano does not add much to what our offense lacks, namely OBP. He does give pretty awesome power though, to protect ramirez or Burnitz. Gerut figures to be a good late inning defensive replacement and maybe occassional starter for left. If you deal Holly you still got Grieve to be a lefty bat off the bench. Question is what would this do to Murton's situation...

Weird i just read an article on espn talking about how Soriano didn't want to be moved to the outfield.

Lineup with Soriano:

not much change really just plug alfonso in for holly:

Hairston

Walker

Lee

Ramirez

Burnitz

Soriano

Barret

Cedeno

Or what dusty will do:

Hairston

Walker

Lee

Burnitz

Ramirez

Neifi

Soriano

Macias at catcher to maintain the alternating Lefty righty thing

hey dude you cant have two right handed batters in a row you know, dude.

How great would having Soriano in LF really be? He is a good power hitter, especially for a second baseman, but how much better is he than an average LF? He also has a pretty low OBP. I guess I'd do it as long as the Cubs didn't have to give up too much talent or take on too much money. Maybe Hendry could pry a reliever from them too.

For some reason I thought he had a better OBP. Only a .322 career OBP. I change my opinion...i'd pass

Actually, what Dusty would do would be more like:

Hairston

Walker

Lee

Burnitz

Aramis

Soriano

Perez

Barrett

I don't know why he thinks Barrett should bat behind Perez, but he will continue to bat eighth until Dusty leaves.

The guy is on pace to hit 40+ dingers this year. If the price is right then get him...

His OBP is still an upgrade over Holly... Plus hed be most likely giving Ramirez pretty potent protection.

 Warning - comment more than vaguely unrelated and certainly not especially serious

Soriano is my favourite player on Backyard Baseball. Man can that Little Leaguer hit!

The commentators also pronounce his name in such a way that I would copy if he wound up at the Cubs, really bouncy.

More serious part of comment

Cubs really needs OBP rather than power, I would say. However, if the price isn't too high (I'd settle for getting rid of Corey) then do it - it certainly can't hurt.

what the cubs need is consistent hitting and pitching, and soriano doesnt provide either IMO

Looks about right to me, but when Nomar comes back where does he hit??

Walker

Nomar

Lee

Burnitz

Ramirez

Soriano

Hairston

Barret

?? or maybe he just bats in the 7 hole until he gets his stroke back...

either way our current lineup plus Soriano and Nomar looks pretty good to me.

The way I see it, he's an upgrade at either LF or second base, and if it doesnt hurt us long term, I wouldnt turn down any deal that upgrades the team.

Sure, we need more OBP, but if a guy that lacks OBP but has power is available, and is an upgrade, do it.

You think Dusty will let Nomar get the everyday job back from Neifi right away? I guess it depends a little on how his rehab goes, but I expect Nomar and Perez to platoon at SS for a while. Dusty has said something along the lines of everyone earning their starting spot while talking about Nomar. I know the exact quote is i somebody's sig, but I'm too lazy to look for it.

I think home/road splits are a little overrated. Sure the Ameriqest Field is known a hitter's park. But something that can't be calculated is that some guys are just more comfortable playing at home. According to ESPN's park factor data, Ameriquest barely favors the hitter over the pitcher. And the data is skewed mostly by the fact that triples are greatly outweighed to the hitter. I just think it's normal for the majority of players to feel more comfortable driving to work at their leisure, rather than busing it, and getting a good night's sleep.

I'm still convinced the Cubs are going to flip him somewhere that needs a second baseman.

I agree. The Twins need a 2nd baseman since Boone is not panning out. If the Cubs acquire Soriano, who would we want from them if we deal them either Hairston, Walker, or Soriano (or Neifi)?

The only thing that Soriano doesn't do consistently is walk.

April:

.267 - 5 HR - 10 RBI - 17 Runs

May:

.304 - 9 HR - 23 RBI - 24 Runs

June:

.276 - 6 HR - 17 RBI - 16 Runs

July:

.283 - 5 HR - 18 RBI - 12 Runs

Personally I'm not particularily interested in adding Soriano to the current team. It does nothing to address the OBP problem that our offense has had for over 2 years now while adding another impatient free swinging hitter who strikes out too much.

If it's part of a "master plan" to move him to some other team for someone to fill a need for us, then it's worth it, but if not I say no to picking him up.

I like Soriano's power, but we still don't have enough OBP guys. Soriano may hit 15 dingers over the last 2 months, but if he's in Chicago, chances are 12 of them will be solo shots. I don't think this solves our problems.

I agree.

He's a pretty substantial upgrade in LF over what we have/have been getting. He may be the best realistically available upgrade in LF out there.

I wish his OBP was higher also, but he may be the best available overall upgrade. I'm not too worried about the home/road splits and think he would do just fine in Wrigley. He didn't have a problem hitting on the road as a Yankee and it's not like he's a guy who just built a decent career by playing in a hitter's park.

Why's that? Put him 5th in the lineup behind Ramirez and Lee and they won't all be solo shots.

Too bad we can't package Holla in, move Soriano to center, and play Murton in left. I don't know, I just don't like the fact you don't play the kid with the .543 OBP :x
