I mean, if Hendry pulls off another "Cubs get Nomar/Murton in a GREAT deal - day of Deadline" type of blockbuster like last year, everything will be great. But all there's been so far are some not-so-strong rumors and we usually have a really good idea of who and when by this time of the Trading Deadline... don't we?

I was kinda excited about Kearns, but then you all are throwing out names like Manny Ramirez and Soriano, and all of a sudden, getting Kearns would be almost a "last ditch effort" now, IMO.

Yup. The worst part is, I got married on 7/31 and my wife won't let me keep tabs on what's happening.

Jim, if you have a blockbuster up your sleeves, please do it Saturday or darn early Sunday morning!!!! :D

Tell me about it, I work all day during the deadline so I wont know until after-the-fact or unless someone tells me before I get home.

Also, good luck Sunday.

Something tells me that if Manny Ramirez is not wearing Cubbie blue by Sunday, there's going to be ALOT of dejection amongst the fans here.

Unless we can get another big name(s) and not give up the farm to do it.

As of right now there's no reason to expect we get him. That could change but it's wishful thinking rather than rational.

..but boy am I wishing.

Yeah. It is pretty much wishful thinking. I'm not even sure we have the budget room to accomodate him without significant salary relief coming back our way. Unless Hendry got him for just this season, and then dealt him in the winter.

I hope Jim wouldn't have to give up the farm to get Manny (if we were to), but if the deal was good enough in Boston's eyes, we might get them to take on a little bit of his contract money and/or get cash along with him in the deal.

Jim has been a "miracle worker" as of late... a 3/4 team deal to get him just might unfold this weekend.

For some uber-retarted reason my boss has me working 12:30 -4. What in the blue hell was he thinking? A three and a half hour shift? Crazy old man. Of course those 3.5 hours fall right ontop of the flippin deadline (assuming the deadline is 3 ET like it was last year)

Why? That's just ridiculous.

If we do something, good, if we dont, oh well, were still good enough to at least keep the WC race interesting.

Would love to see Manny in a Cubs uniform. Other than that, there probably aren't manny available bats that I would like and I'd rather see relief pitching.

Primarily, I just keep hoping we can ship Dusty somewhere for a player to be named. If anything, such a transaction would go further to improving this team than any other. As I recall, Houston made the big run last year only after Williams was canned. It's time for us to get the same kind of spark to lift this team from a functioning mediocrity.

I just turned on the Score and Murph was talking about Soriano. Is there any indication that Hendry's talking to Texas - or is this speculation on his part?

Alright, that was over the top. But that Manny thread is now at 10 pages and it ain't all "we don't him" or "1000% chance of not getting him, so forget about it".

Seems like more than a few people are really hoping and wishing it'll happen.

I read on another site that the Score said that the Cubs are only "mildly interested" in Soriano and that he does NOT want to be moved to the OF.

I may be in the vast minority, but I don't want to see Todd Walker go. But if a deal for Soriano were to be made, Todd would almost have to go, wouldn't he? I don't see Soriano being a bench player. And if we trade for Soriano - and AS isn't going to play in the OF - iS's gonna be the everyday starter at 2B.

IF Soriano would agree to play LF, I wouldn't mind dealing for him, but I don't like the idea of giving up a proven top-of-the-order guy like Walker, who can also man 2B very adequately.

I hope like all heck that we get him. I wish that we would get him. But that doesnt come close to meaning I think we will actually get him.

We also had about a 74 page thread on Dunn with the majority of the people wanting him and no "1000% chance of not getting him" posts.

There are a number of players that could have led to a similar thread.

That doesn't mean we should be dejected if we don't get him.

Well of course more than a few people are really hoping it will happen. More than a few people would really be hoping and wishing a trade for A-Rod or Vlad would happen if there was the slightest hint that they were available. Again, that doesn't mean people should be dejected if it doesn't happen.

The likelihood of Manny being traded, and being traded to the Cubs are very low. What do we know:

1. Manny asked to be traded. This is the 4th straight year he's asked to be traded.

2. Lucchino said they would take offers and look into it, but it would be a very difficult deal to work out on both ends.

That's it. There isn't much pointing to a possible deal with the Cubs.

If we had been reading about rumors for a player like Dunn or Ramirez for the past month and had an offer on the table where it looked likely but it didn't go through, then there would be good reason to be dejected.

But this is wishful thinking and a pipedream trade more than anything else.

True on all counts.

But Nomar was a "pipedream" when we all first found about the rumor about trading for him last year, too. So as unlikely as getting Manny is this Deadline, its nevertheless something to keep in the back of the mind as Sunday rapidly approaches.
