NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Yankees agreed to acquire pitcher Shawn Chacon from the Colorado Rockies for a pair of minor leaguers on Thursday night, filling the opening in their injury-ravaged rotation, The Associated Press learned.

In exchange for Chacon, a 27-year-old right-hander, the Rockies get Ramon Ramirez and Eduardo Sierra, two baseball team officials with knowledge of the trade said on the condition of anonymity.

Huh. New York must really be scraping if they are stockpiling guys like Leiter, Nomo and Chacon.

Odds are one of them will be good, right?

Chacon has been highly thought of in the past. People used to say it was pitching in Colorado that ruined his stuff, but he actually has had a 5.21 ERA away from home the last 3 years. So, it's hard to say if the change in venue will improve his stats. But, he certainly is the kind of player that has the potential to rise to the occassion under Joe Torre and Mel Stottlemyre. In addition, he may have an initial advantage in changing leagues since batters will not be familiar with his stuff.

The yankees have a terrible GM. They trade for Kevin Brown and others and sign pitchers like Wright for 8mil? Pathetic.

Don't forget about Georgey. Cashmen gets grief for a lot of Steinbrenner's half-backed ideas. While Sheff has produced, Cashmen had a deal for Vlad that got bumped due to the Boss's whim. Vlad would have been a better long term choice.

And one of my fantasy teams raises a big holler that it might get a few more points.

Maybe it's just my hatred for the Yankees, but to me the Rockies should have gotten more for Chacon. There were lots of teams interested in him.

I think Vlad is obviously a better long term choice when looking at it from a blanket perspective, but for a situation like the Yankees, I think Sheff was a better choice as he has proven to be more durable and also has shown to adapt very well to the NY media. I think Vlad may have had a tougher time dealing with that since he tends to want to shy away from the media.

I hate to defend Cashman, but what has the moves lately cost the Yankees? Absolutely nothing. Getting potentially something for nothing is always a good move IMO. Now, if they use these moves as an excuse to not still address the obvious holes on the team, then it becomes a problem.
