believe both were just not resigned (could well be wrong there). Mueller left the offseason we got Dusty I think, & I was hopeful that Mueller would fit the bill as a 'Dusty guy' & be kept around, but instead we were Ramon Martinez'd.

According to baseball-reference.com,

Mueller was traded in September of 2002 to the Giants for minor league pitcher Jeff Verplancke.

Tucker was traded in December of 2001 to the Royals for a PTBNL that ended up being minor leaguer Shawn Sonnier.

or perhaps they were traded for the minor leaguers others have mentioned....disregard.

Tucker I didn't care much about, but I was very sorry to see Bill Mueller go. He was one of those quiet guys who just went about his business professionally. He made all the routine plays and a few exceptional ones and was one of those guys I wanted to see come up to bat with the game on the line.

I know some of you wouldn't consider there to be many similarities, but I always thought of him somewhat like a Mark Grace who played 3B.

I think the Cubs thought his knees weren't going to hold up much longer but he's sure been a steady rock for Boston.

As an aside, I've heard rumors of him possibly being packaged in a trade to the Twins for a relief pitcher.

I, too, was sad to see Mueller go. The organization may not have thought his knee was ever going to be 100% again after he broke his kneecap in 4 places (that hurts just typing it) sliding into the barrier in St. Louis.

Although Mueller was traded to SF, he was a rental player set to become a free agent. We tried to resign him before 2003 and he wanted to return to the Cubs because of Dusty and his fried Shawn Estes, but Boston offered more money and a starting position that we could not promise. We started out 2003 with Mark Bellhorn as the third baseman since he hit 27 homeruns the year before.
