What do some of these potential outfielders that we may aquire bring to the table? What type of player do we need? Another HR hitter? Good OBP? What part of the batting order is in dire need of an upgrade?

ORIGINAL MESSAGE - Hairston played primarily in LF when he was with Baltimore, and I definitely like him more than Holla, Murton, or Dubois...What possibilties would there be to get a solid CF now that Kotsay is off the market with his new contract? With all of the SP's in the Cub's minors, would trading Angel be a big deal at this point? I thought it would be a good idea to get Junior from Cinci on account of they're out of contention, want to put Wily Mo in, and we have the money to afford him...We could also get Aurillia in the deal, because he's on the block too...is there any better trade possibilities you can think of that'll work?

I'd prefer Dunn to Pena in acquiring Reds OF's(I think they'd be more willing to trade Dunn too). Aurilia I want no part of. I'd rather see Cedeno play every day. He could likely put up similar numbers while assisting his development at no player cost.

I don't think he had Wily Mo as part of the deal. I think he was saying the Reds may want to move Jr. to get Pena in there full time. But since Kearns was sent down Pena has been getting full-time playing time. Pena's number have increased every year and he is only 23 years old. I would love Dunn since he brings left-handed power but Pena would be a great pick-up as well.

I don't see the upside in Pena at all. Career OBP of .305, and it's only .314 this season. I'd pass.

We already have burnitz, i know Griffey strikes out a lot too but Dunn is just outrageous with how much he whiffs. More importantly than who they could get...who would they give up for an outfielder? Is Angel getting too hurt to hold onto, and with Hill and Brownlie knocking on the door, can getting rid of a starting pitcher in the farm system be worth it? There'll only be one open position in the rotation until Maddux goes after next season...

Guzman is too hurt to trade at this point, and Brownlie has been converted into a reliever as of late, due to a drop off in velocity.

Also, not to beat the dead horse even deader, but Dunn's on-base is in the .400s. It doesn't matter if he strikes out 200 times or 125 times and grounds out to 2B the rest of the time; if he's getting on base 40% of the time, he's incredibly valuable.

Well said. It's all about not making outs. Period. If we send 30 Major league caliber batters to the plate and make fewer outs than the other team, more times than not, we'll out score them, particularly if we're hitting it harder than them when we DO. (hence OBP is first, followed by slugging...AVG and Ks are secondary, less important aspects of each).

Dunn's OBP is about .365 while hitting about .222. The trick is that he hits in the 6 spot, with struggling Wily Mo and LaRue behind him. Burnitz's OBP isn't quite as high, at about .350, and he does have a .280 BA to top Dunn's, but power-hitting 6th spots tend to get walked a lot to get into the other hitters. If we do get Dunn, would he hit in the 6? He would be a 4 or 5, and have Burnitz and Aramis potentially behind him, which gives Dunn a lot nicer pitches to look at, but will also lower his OBP to a certain extent...I suppose what I'm getting at is do we need another rbi man with bad defense?

Griffey said that he WILL NOT be traded, and since he has a no trade clause, dont get too excited. On the subject of Willy Mo Pena, he is the guy with the most potential, so i dont he would be traded either. If the reds are to deal one of the 4 outfielders, it would be dunn/kearns. With both Chicago and Houston interested, and both being in the same division, Cinicy can raise the bidding, and also force some other players off to which ever gives the best offer. Id suspect seeing players like aurilla or randa or casey included
