All that said, Penn, Bigbie and Julio, that's roughly equivalent to Marshall, Dubois and Hawkins really. Marlins are getting fleeced.

I wonder if we don't tend to overrate our own guys and underrate those of other teams? Julio is having a reasonable year (WHIP of 1.20, and excellent K/BB), is young, and has a big arm. Marlins need a strong reliever. Equating Julio with Hawkins is silly, IMO.

Why? Both are guys with heavy fastballs that they feel most comfortable reverting to, and they also both throw sliders. Their contractual situations are reasonably similar. The biggest difference is that Hawkins is a lot older. Both have shown a tendency to be a bit eratic.

Penn is 20 years old,, and scouts with a much bigger arm than Marshall, IMO.

Maybe. Penn's a nice prospect. But I'm a big Marshall fan too.

Bigbie is pretty worthless, but he's athletic unlike Dubois.

At least Dubois can hit. Well, kind of. Bleh, okay, he can't hit, but at least he's cheap.

If Florida considered the analogy to be Dempster, Hill, and Murton, would that look so trivial?

I consider Marshall a better prospect than Hill. Murton I prefer to Dubois, but I don't think either will be a great major league hitter. Dempster's out of contract at the end of the year. It's still a bad haul for the Marlins.

BTW, there are 2 threads about this deal.

I got to thinking about the 3 Marlins trade threads in this forum and thought. If this trade goes thru, and they get Julio.....wouldn't that make Mota available? What about the Pierre rumors? I'm not the biggest Pierre fan, but he's not that bad. He has a career .356 OBP, and has started to hit again (.356 since June 25th). He's also about 80% in SB%. I would still like to add a corner OF bat......but would anyone do a trade of say: Pierre and Mota for Williams/Mitre and a minor league pitcher?

done and done.

i was thinking the same thing earlier-if the Marlins are in sell mode then I would gladly take Pierre and Mota off their hands for them- If a deal was made for Pierre then he would have to sign an extension just because the prospect price is going to be high for him. He can keep CF warm this year and next(if arby eligible then he doesn't have to sign ext. IMO) What is Mota's contract situation? he is fairly unhappy in Florida with the "closer" situation earlier this year-he was dominant with LA and with a change of scenery could definitely be again.

another way to get some bullpen help would be to get the Yanks involved with Pierre-they expressed interest earlier in hte year and maybe that could lower the demands for him-

Yanks get-Pierre+Remmy

Cubs get-Mota+Gordon

Fish get-Dubois+Mitre+Pinto+Duncan?

I think it takes a better deal but thats the gist, a 3-way that nets us 2 very solid bullpen arms in Mota and Gordon-

We're way overpaying here. Remmy, Dubois, Mitre and Pinto for Mota and Gordon? That's too steep.

So if the marins moved lowell, I assume Cabrera goes back to 3B. Do they then use Bigbie as a bench bat and bring up Hermida for LF?

That could be an interesting line up.

Yeah, that would be pretty interesting. I think they could do this deal, add a ML ready starting pitcher (maybe by trading Mota?) and still compete for the Wild Card.

I didn't realize how good Hermida was until I looked at his stats. I didn't know he had such a good eye. His stats remind me a lot of a certain Philly outfielder...

Hermida (in AA):

.295/.452/.519 19/20 SB 14 HR 75 BB 67K (278 AB)

Abreu (in 05):

.299/.422/.509 22/27 SB 18 HR 71 BB 69 K (338 AB)

If the Marlins get rid of Lowell they coud easily still take the wildcard if Hermida plays well and someone steps up to replace Burnett (such as Vargas, who will debut tonight). Although, those are two big ifs, it sure makes things interesting.

Haven't seen this posted elsewhere, but O's are expected to land Burnett and Lowell for Julio, Bigbie, and their top pitching prospect (Hayden Penn). Per CBS Sportsline.

The deal now includes the Pirates getting Lowell?

YIKES http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=burnettdealexpandsthirdt&prov=tsn&type=lgns

Daryl Ward/ AJ Burnett to O's

Mike Lowell/$$/Eric Reed to Pirates

Mark Redman/Hayden Penn/Jorge Julio/Larry Bigbie

Marlins pick up a large portion of Lowell's salary...

Any thoughts?

Pirates make out well if all they give up is Ward and Redman, and they don't pay much of any salary.

Interesting deal. The fish must want Lowell gone pretty badly to nearly pay all his salary to get himout, although they do make out very well in that deal overall. Except for Redman. He's not that good.

If that is the deal I'd say the Angelos is grasping for this year badly. Ward is not that good and Burnett although a better than average pitcher is injury prone. On the other side they give up some pretty big upside potential guys in Bigbie and Penn.

I feel bad for Lowell he grew up in Miami and went to FIU. Now he goes to Pittsburgh. I think the Pirates got an ok deal, turning Redman and Ward into Lowell and Reed.

Obviously I think the Marlins did pretty well in this deal. Although it appears they are looking to the near future now. Oh well, at least they got something for Burnett.

If this deal goes down I wouldn't be surprized to see McKeon shown the door too.

Considering the way the Marlins have been playing lately, I get the hunch it won't be long. Alot of reports coming out of FLA is saying that McKeon has lost the team.

Is Bigbie really a big upside guy?

Jody Gerut career (age 27): .267/.338/.440

Larry Bigbie career (age 27): .273/.336/.407

Gerut is actually younger than Bigbie by a month and a half.
