That's one hell of a pitching match up. But the X factor is that the Cards have a MUCH tougher line up. Clemens is going to have to be on top of his game, cause I don't forsee the Stros line up doing much damage against Carp.

You never know. I would agree with you that Clemens has the tougher task.

With the Stros this weekend and the Cubs next weekend, we're getting ready to see some awesome pitching matchups!

Agreed. What's the pitching match up for tomorrow's game?

Clemens is always up to the task, but Carpenter is having an incredible year. If I were to guess, there won't be more than 4 or 5 runs scored in this game.

Either that, or it's going to be a slugfest, and we'll both be wrong.

Yeah, the last time I predicted a game like that was when Lieber and Mulder faced off and both had been pitching great. It ended up being something like a 9-7 game :)

I'm looking for the matchups for this weekend.

edit: it was Carpenter and Lieber. Cards won 8-4 in a slugfest...

So...

I'm rooting for the Cardinals this series. I'd like them to sweep the Astros, so a potential WC candidate is weakened. I think at this point we can concede the division and ask the Cardinals to beat up on WC candidates.

That's what I'm rooting for as well. As much as it makes me nearly vomit in my mouth to root for the Cardinals, I think a sweep of the Astros would be in our best interests.

Yeah this is a strange weekend with Mets facing Braves. Who are also both ahead of us, I'd guess it'll be the same as Cards/Astros. Have Braves beat up on the Mets with the Assumption that the Braves win the division and Nationals fall out.

I think these are the matchups for the Cubs/Cards series.

July 22:

Zambrano (6-4, 3.85) vs. Carpenter (13-4, 2.51)

July 23:

Williams (1-3, 4.89) vs. Morris (10-2, 3.10)

July 24:

Prior (6-3, 3.07) vs. Suppan (9-7, 4.21)

I'll give the Cardinals the advantage in the first two games, but you never know what you're going to get from Zambrano. He mowed down the Cardinals earlier.

Scored some sweet tickets last nite to the Clemens/Carpenter matchup today @ Busch which is apparently sold out.

Oughta be one helluva game!! I'll be sporting my cubbie blue proudly and cross my fingers for a cardinals sweep of the stros and a victory from Zambrano today to move another game past the 'stros. :D

Interesting tidbit....

In 7 appearances on the road totalling 45ip, Clemens has only given up ONE RUN!! Which yields a road ERA of .20

Sunday is Jim Edmonds Bobblehead Day.

This is must have collectable for the true NSBB poster. What would you do with your Jim Edmonds Bobblehead?

It was actually the Jim Edmonds "the catch" figurine day.

Great pitching by all three Cardinal starters this weekend. Carpenter just absolutely dominated the Astros today. They looked like little leaguers. His cruve ball was just ridiculous.

The Astros linuep isn't the best, for sure, but they were the hottest team in baseball over the last month coming into this series and the Cardinals put the smack down on them big time.

During the offseason the Cubs should pick up as many average players as possible and hope they turn out good. It works for Walt Jocketty... why not us?

I don't know but whatever it is is more than just luck. Good scouting? Jocketty seems to have some kind of gift lately for finding guys who will thrive under our system. They are average elsewhere, but bring them to STL and the blow up.

They obviously saw something in Carpenter, though, that's not just a lucky break. They signed him when he was already injured after Toronto released him and let him get healthy. He was great last year, then had the nerve problem in the elbow that cut his season short.

Right now he's practically unhittable.

Maybe they should get 3 guys in the middle of the lineup who will put up at least a 900+ OPS so the average guys don't need to do as much. Adam Dunn anyone? Seriously though, if we got Dunn, would we have a better offense than the Cards? It'd be pretty close I think.

I think you should make this into a new thread.

It is aggravating to watch this, as a Cub fan. How did they know Carp wouldn't get hurt worse? And what did the scouts see in Tony Womack? That seemed kind of like a desperation move to fill a hole in the middle infield.

I guess we really can't complain too much though. Guys like Randall Simon did well for themselves with the Cubs, so we do get our share. I guess I'm forgetting Glendon Rusch too.

Look at Jim Edmonds' stats before and after the trade to St. Louis. Before the trade he was very good, but frequently injured and never put up an OBP above .375 or an OPS+ above 137. Since he joined the Cards his OBP has been above .400 every year except one, and his OPS+ has been 148 or better each year. Plus he's been a lot more durable.

put eyeliner on it, then make it fall down when making routine catches?

How can this be explained? How old was he when he came to St Louis? And did he move up in the order? Putting him in front of McGwire is similar to hitting in front of Bonds. He's going to see more pitches to hit. As for his improved durability, any ideas?
