Clemens has earned it over the longer run. You're right though, it really doesn't matter. Most will get 1 inning

I think they need to be more consistent in their selection criteria. Last year, Clemens beat out Randy Johnson even though Johnson's numbers were better at the AS break because he was penalized for his low win total playing for AZ. Now people are clamoring for him to start this year, even though his wins aren't as high playing for a lesser Astros team (which I wouldn't disagree with).

It's just an exhibition game. Don't buy into "This Time It Counts."

 

Plus, given LaRussa's tendencies to overmanage, particularly in important games, he'll likely blow this one, too, regardless who starts.

Lets compare him to Carpenter

 

Clemens: 1.48 ERA

Carpenter: 2.51 ERA

 

Clemens: 0.95 WHIP

Carpenter: 1.07 WHIP

 

 

Clemens: .188 BAA

Carpenter: .225 BAA

 

Carpenter has a slight edge in K/9 and K/BB. I would still start Clemens, mainly because he is the first pitcher in a long time to have an ERA this low this far into the season...

 

Clemens: 7 W

Carpenter: 13 W

 

What do the cardinals bullpen and hitting, and the astros bullpen and hitting have to do with roger clemens and chris carpenter's years as pitchers so far? It just doesn't make sense.
