He'll be in Arizona until late next week. Then it's off to Iowa. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he'll hit minor league pitching. If this is the case, where will he bat in Iowa? I think it would make sense to hit him 6-8, since that's where he would hit if/when he recalled. Does anyone think he'll hit 3-5 in the minors? And if he did hit 3-5, wouldn't that be conuterproductive to =what the team wants him to do?

Thoughts?

He'll probably hit 3rd, he was a 3 hitter all throughout his minor league career, and truthfully, Iowa doesn't have anyone really deserving of being a 3 hitter anyway.

If they still feel he's got the stuff it takes to be a leadoff guy, he may hit leadoff...

It doesn't really matter where he hits. As Bobby Cox said in his ESPNInsider interview, a good hitter can hit no matter where you put him.

More than anything, Corey needs to work on two things:

1. Recognizing pitches.

2. Making consistent contact at the plate.

With his ability and skills, if he can do those things, he could hit no matter where you put him in the line-up.

But isn't there a psychological aspect involved as far as the game goes. I mean, the Iowa Cubs will still try to be winning games, right? So won't his approach to his ABs change depending on where he bats or the game situation? Wouldn't it make sense to bat him with Iowa where he is anticipated to bat back with the big league club? Maybe I'm reading too much into it.

I totally agree. Batter's don't make hitting adjustments based on where they bat in the lineup. It makes no difference where he bats, just as it had nothing to do with his stuggles this year. Once the game starts, your approach for each AB is determined by the situation. I don't buy that Corey's problem was he was batting in different spots.

In theory, what Bobby Cox says is true. But Bobby Cox isn't the manager of the Cubs. The Cubs tried to make Corey into a slap hitter this year as part of his leadoff assignment, going as far as to change his swing last offseason, and thus making a differenec where he bats.
