Perhaps they'll have Corey play left....

I think it's safe to say as of right now Holla and Dubois are better options in LF than Corey. :newugh:

I actually find it kind of ridiculous that we are weeks away from the All-Star game and we still don't have a set lineup.

We have rarely had a set lineup...at all...during Dusty's tenure.

In '03, when we acquired the 3 guys from Pittsburgh, we were fairly consistent. Other than that, we have struggled with problems at SS (last year, pre-Nomar and post-Nomar) CF (Corey to leadoff, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th) and various other positions.

My guess:

Perez

Walker

Lee

Burnitz

Ramirez

Holla

Patterson

Blanco

Maddux

Rocket, you are today's guess the lineup winner! For your achievement, you get:

Hairston takes his frustration public as he is not in the lineup leading off and the worst two options in baseball continue to be shuffled in that spot:

Hairston Puzzled

This should help Hairston go right into the doghouse.

:?

He already has been in the doghouse. It can't get any worse.

The obvious question is why isn't Hairston leading off?

"I don't want to get into that," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "I said what I was going to do and that's what I'm doing."

I am a calm person, and it has gotten to the point that I want to scream at the TV everytime I see Dusty on it. He is a stupid, stubborn old bastard.

Fire him, and promote Grady Little before some other team snatches Grady away.

This spells even more trouble for those of us that would like to see Cedeno get any sort of a shot. If Hairston (a veteran) can go out and kick butt as a lead off hitter, and he still can't keep the job, there's no way Cedeno (not a veteran) will get any significant playing time even if he hits like Derrek Lee.

That quote bothers me more than any Dusty quote I've seen yet.

Perhaps I'm reading too much into it, but I seem to gather that Dusty is just too stubborn, too proud, to change his ways even though all the evidence points to the contrary.

It's as if he KNOWS Hairston should lead off full-time now, but he's just neglecting to do it, for whatever stubborn reason he has. "I said what I was going to do and that's what I'm doing." Sounds like what a 5 year old would say when he wants to do something HIS way.

So no matter what happens, Dusty's going to do what Dusty wants to do. That will, again, be the downfall of this year's Cubs.

It is nearing the point of being so infuriating that I can't take it anymore, and may have to just laugh about it. It is truly sad.

isnt grady little already gone?

I heard the new Reds manager wanted to make him a bench coach. I don't know if it actually happened though.

So his reluctance to play Hairston in LF is based on what, exactly? Oh, because it's the "hardest OF position to learn"...wait, what's that? Hairston's got more time in LF than Dubois? Dubois can play LF and stumble around all he wants, but Jerry Hairston would be a defensive liability...

He can't be gone soon enough...and as far as this being and "overreaction" to a losing streak...NO...it's been a long time comin' for Dusty and Co. Get Grady Little or ANYBODY in there than can deal with young players, or players with the ability to take a pitch. Dusty seems to have no patience for either of them.

Dusty won't play Hairston in LF because of his "obligation" to Hollandsworth. We hall saw what it took to get him benched earlier, and how lightning quick he was the starter at the first sign of life. It's the same "obligation" he has for Perez that has Cedeno anchored to the bench.

The man has always had "his" players, dating back to his days in SF, and he feels obligated to give them every chance and then some to play.

Too bad he seems to feel less obliged to win ball games.

Posted
Well Hairston should get a chance to play everyday if Lee is out for a few days. Of course we will probably see Macias start at first or right tomorrow and bat at the top of the order...but then dusty loses his #1 pinch hitter. Such decisions.

I hate these stupid commitments Dusty makes to certain players...because they are always to players who don't get the job done. Holla had one good half a season with the Cubs, suddenly he's Mantle re-incarnated...

Perez has 2 good months with the Cubs (one this year, one last) and he's A-Rod's clone...Lenny Harris is a career pinch hits leader...so lets START him at 3b and let him do what he does WORST, play every day.

While personal integrity and loyalty to your players is admirable, this is a business, and winning is the priority. Dusty obviously doesn't see things that way, and the Cubs are suffering for it.

I particularly like this Dusty quote after tonights game

"That's the difference," manager Dusty Baker said. "We're getting hits. But we're not getting them with runners on base"

Perhaps using players who get on base might help.

I can understand and even favor loyalty to a certain extent. You can't have too short of a leesh with a given player. Everyone deserves a fair shot. However, with that said, when an obviously superior player is not getting said chance, the loyalty factor goes out the window, and you now must go with the better player.

Hairston right now, is a better fit for our team than either Patterson or Hollandsworth/Dubois. Cedeno is also a better fit for this team than is Neifi...and it can't be due to defense, because Cedeno is clearly as good as Perez defensively. He's always been heralded as a great gloveman. He hits .370 in AAA, but he's not ready for significant playing time in the bigs because Neifi's still hitting .260's because of his one good month...and disregard his sub .300 OBP, that stat doesnt mean anything, because it's called hitting, not walking.

Forget playing the younger, better, more promising player...that's old-fashioned...the new thing to do is to let all the young players come up on teams like Kansas City, Tampa Bay, Toronto, Pittsburgh, Cinci, and Colorado...until they are at least 27-28...then you trade for them. That's how the young talent gets influxed into the market...because we are above rookies...we are the Cubs. We wouldn't want Cedeno to come in and have a decent amount of success so he could possibly be our starting SS for 5+ years and we could wave goodbye to Nomar and save on some salary...because that would make Dusty & Co. look foolish for not making the move to Cedeno earlier...
