Yeah, baseball gonna baseball, but it seems so obvious this team's ceiling is limited at an NLDS appearance due to the pitching staff. They're just so bad that unless the offense just goes nuts, it's hard to see them making any sort of run.

There’s teams with higher payrolls than the Cubs and all will finish with a worse record than Milwaukee. What bothers me is year after year there’s always some fatal flaw in the roster that’ll limit their ability to make a deep playoff run. Last year it was the rotation, before that it was a lack of front line talent and a hole at third base, this year it’s the bullpen. They refuse to go over the LT and sign front line arms while at the same time have neglected drafting arms to varying degrees in the first 6 rounds for fear of attrition. 
 

Injuries aren’t an excuse for a replacement level pitching staff. Not a single arm on the active roster drafted and developed by the Cubs. I can go and on but figure it the horsefeathers out.

They can't even manage average pitching, an average staff probably wins one of the previous two games.  It does not have to be like this, the Cubs have more than enough resources to manage, at least, an average pitching staff.

They'll get in, Arizona is not going to pass the Cubs.  They also have a replacement level staff with a far worse lineup.   Just took a quick glance at Arizona' statistics, overall pitching WAR of 9.8 with 5.1 coming from a guy, Rodríguez, who is out pitching his underlying data.

It's maddening.  A buddy of mine said they just put the ball in play that's why they are so successful.  But specifically yesterday they were getting hit after hit off bat handle bloopers and we putting the ball in play just as much but ours were barreled up rockets to the track for outs.

I know baseball is random like that a lot but it's maddening at times.

I know the Cubs bullpen is terrible and all.  However, both games the Brewers won misplays by the Cubs were the key elements.

It’s not really misplays. Not if you watch other teams besides the Cubs. It is plays we are used to seeing made, not made. Hits, but ball “typically” the Cubs defense gets to. Watch other games and see those plays not made on a regular basis.

Defense is the reason, with the team being 30th in pitching WAR, they are middle of the pack in runs allowed. We are used to seeing great defense, so when it falters to just good we think the misplayed a few balls. Reality is, they just aren’t making as many run saving difficult plays as in the past. So now the pitching is performing closer to what there was ranking suggest. Really need Dansby back and the defense to be great again.
