The 4th of July has come around and it finds the Cubs continuing to run in circles. After an 8 day period which saw the Cubs win 4 in a row and turn around and lose 4 in a row, the Cubs look to put a 2-4 homestand behind them and go back on the road to take on three of the tougher teams in the NL, the Braves, Marlins and Phillies.

It starts tonight as Kerry Wood makes his second start off the DL, returning to the place of his greatest triumphs as a pitcher, namely Games 1 and 5 of the 2003 NLDS. Also in his last start in April 2004, he dominated the Braves striking out (I believe) 11, and at one point had 6-7 K's in a row (at work, don't have time to look up the numbers). He will go up against the rookie Kyle Davies. Not much is known about the youngster (from me at least), but he has put up respectable numbers in his brief stint in the majors.

The matchups:

vs.

Let's pick up a win, get back over .500 and gain some ground in the Wild Card all in one 9 inning period.

Go Cobs! Go USA!

Wasn't Kerry's game last year against Atlanta the one where he popped his blister and got blood all over himself but still kept pitching (and kicking tail)?

Davies is a fine pitching prospect. He throws a low-90s fastball, a 12-5 curve and a very good changeup. BA ranked him as the Braves #4 prospect before this season.

GO CUBS!

Yep. I was at that game and have a pic of him walking to the dugout after an inning, and there's blood all over his pants. It was the Easter game.

Uh, don't the Cubs play the Braves, Marlins, then the All-Star break, then at home versus the Pirates? I don't think they play the Phillies anytime soon.

That is correct. They travel to Philadelphia the first of August.

Since the CUBS and Braves have not faced each other yet this season, there is no history between the teams to give you. With that, I'm off to Atlanta to watch the CUBS do battle with the Braves.

Go CUBS !!!

My bad, I was doing a spot start while at work, so I didn't bother to look up any of my info. I thought I heard something about 3 road NL east series, but I must have misunderstood 2 road series and 1 home vs. Wash

This is guarenteed victory. The prophet Vance said we wouldn't be below .500 again this season, and he's going to be at the game to make sure that doesn't happen!

That was the one game in that series I wasn't at. I was at the Friday and Saturday games. I'll never forget that series, with Hollandsworth's game-tying HR followed by an extra inning win on Friday, and Pratt and Farnsworth gift-wrapping the Saturday game for the Braves (with Grandpa Franco's HR).

First we were hitting but not pitching.

Now we're pitching but not hitting.

It's like being tied to a see-saw with a hyperactive 9-year-old.

Someone balance the act---Good LORD.

Ugggggggggggggh. That Saturday game was Sergio Mitre's debut, where the kid pitched his heart out and showcased some incredible guts, fortitude, and sheer will to win. I remember seeing him make some of the most impressive defensive plays for a pitcher this side of Greg Maddux.

I'm still bitter about that one. Yech.

Franco didn't HR. He doubled to RF after fouling off a bajillion pitches.

Oops.

I remember him fouling off all the pitches and then getting the hit; I just forgot what type of hit.

NCC, your sig is perhaps the most disturbing thing I've ever seen on NSBB.

Where does my avatar and sig combo rank, CT? :D

You have the avatar that has made me most want to punch my monitor.

Well, this losing streak is really starting to annoy me. If we want to make a move, right now is the good time to do it. Both Atlanta and Florida are in the WC race as Chicago is.

If we can get 5 wins out of 7 games before the All-Star, that would be fantastic.

I remember stomping out of Turner Field, raving like a madman.

"IT'S TOO F****ING LATE KYLE! IT'S TOO F****ING LATE KYLE!"

Two out of three wasn't bad, though.

I wish I could, but I don't have any way to get it on my computer. I only have the prints. Sorry.
